    About

    It can bridge to the first year of either an undergraduate degree or HNC/HND course in engineering for you if your background in mathematics does not extend beyond GCSE level.

    The module consolidates and reinforces basic skills and is intended to give you a grounding in the core areas of mathematics needed to successfully study engineering to undergraduate or HNC/HND level. Topics include algebraic manipulation, functions, trigonometry, and elementary calculus.

    You are provided with a learning pack where core subjects are presented in sequenced lessons that include self assessment questions with solutions to aid developmental learning.

    Tutoring is provided by telephone, e-mail, MS Teams, and where practical and required, by visits to TUOLE where additional support on an individual basis can be given.

    Applicants applying for HNC who do not have a Level 3 (e.g. UK AS Level) or equivalent qualification in mathematics will be required to study the Foundation Mathematics for Engineering (by Flexible Open Learning) module to meet the HNC entry requirements. You will be informed if you are required to study this bridging module in the offer letter you will receive once your HNC application has been processed.

    You can start your Foundation Mathematics for Engineering (by Flexible Open Learning) module at any time once we have received payment for this module. You will receive a progression email once you have successfully completed this module to join the next available HNC enrolment. You will have a maximum of 6 months to complete this module.

    Develops mathematical skills and techniques that are necessary to embark on the first year of an Engineering Programme in Higher Education.

    Indicative Content

    • Algebraic manipulation
    • Functions, including logarithm and exponential functions.
    • Solution of equations with one or more unknown involving algebraic, trigonometric, logarithmic and exponential functions.
    • Right triangle trigonometry, trigonometry applied to non-right angled triangles.
    • Elementary calculus using tables of standard derivatives and integrals.
    • Basic techniques of differentiation and integration.
    • Simple applications of derivatives and integrals.

    The learning materials consist of a self-contained and comprehensive learning package.

    Learning materials will be provided to the student in the form of a series of lessons, these include self assessment questions with solutions to aid developmental learning. Student support tutoring is provided by telephone, e-mail, MS Teams, and where practical and required, by visits to TUOLE where additional support on an individual basis can be given.

    Additional support will be provided via E-learning@tees course materials including tutorial materials, and links to supporting materials, will be placed in the e-learning@tees website.

    Formative Assessment
    The distance learning materials include a series of self-assessment questions and answers at the end of each lesson to allow for progression of learning. Feedback in the form of email, MS Teams or telephone contact is available to the student. The formative assessments provide the students with an opportunity to receive feedback and prepare for the summative assessment.

    Summative Assessment
    Evidence will be provided from a single component of assessment, comprising three elements, equally weighted, in the form of an in-course assessment. Each assessment comprises a set of short answer questions which are related to the sequence and content of the lessons provided within the learning materials.

    The work submitted will be authenticated by an end of module interview
