Foundation Process Chemistry (by Flexible Open Learning)

    About

It can bridge to the first year of either an undergraduate degree or HNC/HND course in chemical engineering. You can study this if your background in chemistry does not extend beyond GCSE level.

You get a learning pack where core chemistry subjects are presented in sequenced lessons that include self-assessment questions with solutions to aid developmental learning.

Tutoring is provided by telephone, e-mail, MS Teams, and where practical and required, by visits to TUOLE where additional support on an individual basis can be given.

Applicants applying for HNC who do not have a Level 3 (e.g. UK AS Level) or equivalent qualification in chemistry will be required to study the Foundation Process Chemistry (by Flexible Open Learning) module to meet the HNC entry requirements. You will be informed if you are required to study this bridging module in the offer letter you will receive once your HNC application has been processed.

You can start your Foundation Process Chemistry (by Flexible Open Learning) module at any time once we have received payment for this module. You will receive a progression email once you have successfully completed this module to join the next available HNC enrolment. You will have a maximum of 6 months to complete this module.

Develop chemistry skills and techniques that are necessary to embark on the first year of a chemical (or related discipline) engineering programme in Higher Education.

    Indicative Content

    Key chemical Concepts

    • Atomic structure and the Periodic Table, electron configurations related to periodic properties.
    • Chemical Bonding
    • Acids, Bases and calculation of pH values using [H+] concentrations
    • Le Chatelier's principle.

    Energy

    • Definition of the property of Enthalpy and related calculations using Formation Enthalpies and Hess's Law

    Organic Chemistry

    • Organic compounds – structure, nomenclature and structural isomerism
    • Polymerisation reactions - addition & condensation reactions

    Electrochemistry

    • Redox reactions and oxidation states
    • The electrochemical series.
    • Introduction to corrosion and methods of prevention

The learning materials consist of a self-contained and comprehensive learning package.

Learning materials will be provided to the student in the form of a series of lessons, these include self-assessment questions with solutions to aid developmental learning.

Student support tutoring is provided by telephone, e-mail, MS Teams, and where practical and required, by visits to TUOLE where additional support on an individual basis can be given.

Additional support will be provided via E-learning@tees course materials including tutorial materials, and links to supporting materials, will be placed in the e-learning@tees website.

    Formative Assessment
The distance learning materials include a series of self-assessment questions and answers at the end of each lesson to allow for progression of learning. Formative assessment is further provided by five tutor marked assessments for the student to complete and submit for marking. The formative assessments provide students with an opportunity to receive feedback and prepare for the summative assessment. Feedback in the form of email or telephone contact is available to the student.

    Summative Assessment
Evidence will be provided from a single synoptic assessment, comprising a set of short answer questions related to the sequence and content of the lessons provided within the learning materials. All learning outcomes will be addressed by means of this synoptic assessment
