About

The foundation year provides a route onto a degree if you don't have the qualifications or have not studied advanced level subjects sufficiently related to your course of choice. After successful completion of the foundation year in environmental science, you can progress on to the environmental science degree.

Whether you want to understand how the material world works or explore the environmental issues shaping our world, the Department of Natural Sciences offers a range of degrees to enable you to learn about the areas and aspects that match your career ambitions.

Whichever route you take, you’ll have the skills and understanding you need to undertake further study or get started in your career.

Course information

All foundation year students study the academic skills for higher education module, which will help you to develop the academic and study skills required for degree-level work.

International and EU students whose first language is not English and who have an IELTS score of less than 5.5 will study an English language module.

Successful completion of the foundation year guarantees automatic progression onto Year 1 of the degree you have chosen to study. Details of the course content of each degree can be found by selecting the relevant course in the A to Z list of courses.

A levels – grades DDD or equivalent

Pearson BTEC National Extended Diploma – MMP

OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - MMP

Pearson BTEC National Diploma - DM

Pass Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject with a minimum of 74 UCAS Tariff points

T Levels - We welcome applications from students undertaking T Level qualifications. Eligible applicants will be asked to achieve a minimum overall grade of Pass as a condition of offer.

IB Diploma - Pass overall with a minimum overall score of 24 or minimum 72 UCAS Tariff points from three Higher Level subjects.

Other Level 3 qualifications equivalent to GCE A level are also considered.

A maximum of three A level-equivalent qualifications will be accepted towards meeting the UCAS tariff requirement.

AS levels, or qualifications equivalent to AS level, are not accepted. The Extended Project qualification (EPQ) may be accepted towards entry, in conjunction with two A level-equivalent qualifications.

Career prospects

After successful completion of the foundation year in environmental science, you can progress on to the relevant BSc (Hons) degree.

Environmental science graduates may go on to a variety of subject-specific careers in the environmental and sustainability industries, in consultancies and environmental services, or in teaching or research. Recent graduates of our BSc (Hons) Environmental Science programme have found employment across a wide range of sectors including environmental consultancies, public utilities, local authorities, industrial research laboratories, and conservation organisations. Our environmental science course is designed to equip you with transferable skills that may also be applied to non-subject-specific career pathways such as in management, local government, teaching or the civil service.
