    About

    This course is ideal for you if youâre looking to apply for assistant psychologist posts, or wish to follow further clinical psychology training routes. Itâs also ideal for intercalating medical students or if youâre keen to pursue a research career.

    This course will develop your knowledge of clinical psychology and your professional and research skills. Youâll be taught by clinical psychologists and psychology staff, and undertake a placement.

    Youâll be based in our £30 million Science Centre in the heart of Stoke-on-Trent, complete with research labs and teaching spaces.

    The Department of Psychology specialises in applied psychological research and teaching. Our work contributes to knowledge in the academic community as well as being relevant to practitioners, policy-makers and the wider community. We already run a suite of undergraduate psychology courses and a well-established Professional Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, so have experienced staff to support you through your studies.

    The MSc Foundations of Clinical Psychology course will give you a grounding in the key areas of Clinical Psychology, including the psychological science of mental health-related experiences, developing your basic therapeutic skills, further training in research methods, as well as understanding the key role of the community and social context in psychological wellbeing.

    Applicants should be aware that this course will include the discussion of a number of sensitive and challenging topics relating to wellbeing and mental ill-health, including suicidality, trauma, and other aspects of distress. The course will also involve individual and group presentations, an assessed and recorded therapeutic skills role-play, personal development and the reflection on personal experiences in group discussions and clinical practice.

    On this course you will study the following modules:

    Clinical Psychology: Science and Experience

    This module will focus on the role and contributions of psychological research to understanding experiences of key clinical mental health conditions, focusing on scientific approaches to understanding the spectrum of mental health experiences.

    Community Perspectives in Clinical Psychology

    This module highlights the importance of context in understanding psychological health and well-being. This community-focused approach locates the causes of distress in the experience, relationship, community and social circumstances of the individual.

    Introduction to Applied Therapeutic and Clinical Skills

    This module provides an introduction to active listening and introduces students to a variety of approaches that can be used in therapeutic work.

    Placement

    Students will complete a community-based or research-focused placement and will be given the opportunity to practice and apply their skills learnt on the course to date to real-world settings and mental health-related contexts.

    Psychology Research Methods

    The main methodologies employed by psychologists are examined, with a focus upon methods frequently employed with clinical psychological research. Advanced quantitative analysis and a range of qualitative techniques are introduced.

    Dissertation

    Students will work independently, with supervision, on a research project of their design answering a research question relating to psychological health and wellbeing.

    Postgraduate

    Courses requiring a 2:1 degree

    • Bachelor degree in a relevant subject with a minimum CGPA of 3.0

    Courses requiring a 2:2 degree

    • Bachelor degree in a relevant subject with a minimum CGPA of 2.5

    English Program Requirements

    The majority of our undergraduate bachelor degree courses require a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0, with 5.5 in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
