    About

    The masters programme in German as a Foreign Language in an Arabic-German Context is a consecutive, research-oriented programme of study offered by the Herder Institute and the Center of Excellence for German and Arabic as Foreign Languages at the Faculty of Education at Ain Shams University in Cairo. The programmes teaching and research profile is a result of the combination of the subject-specific strengths of the Herder Institute (linguistics/applied linguistics, didactics, cultural studies, test research) and the Center of Excellence (comparative literary studies and literary didactics, contrastive linguistics and Arabic-German discourse analysis). In addition, an in-depth exploration of the other universitys scientific culture is one of the focal points of the programme. In Cairo, students from Leipzig are also offered the key qualification module Arabic and Arab Culture”. Particular importance is attached to the supervised internships at renowned institutions of language teaching and cultural exchange in Germany and Egypt.

    Just like the regular MA in Leipzig, this programme is intended to prepare students for academic-based professions and taking into account the latest research findings and current developments to equip them with the necessary specialist knowledge, skills and methods in such a way that they are able to conduct independent scholarly work, think for themselves and act responsibly. In particular, students should learn to reflect on, critically assess and apply basic theories and methods of the subject. They will also have the chance to further develop skills for the independent formulation and handling of complex scientific questions, including in a comparative and interdisciplinary context.

    The double degree programme is a research-oriented consecutive course with an integrated, tuition-free period of study abroad in the third semester at the renowned E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in Athens (Ohio). It is aimed at excellent graduates of degree courses in communication and media studies and offers the opportunity to specialise in the theories, methods and research fields of the subject with a specific focus on media structures and media culture in the US. The double degree equips students with intercultural and terminological skills that prepare them for positions of leadership in global media companies as well as for international research and publishing activities in communication and media. This qualification is achieved, among other things, through: the acquisition of knowledge about the conditions, expressions and consequences of media and public communication and professional activity in these fields the ability to carry out historical, systematic and empirical analyses and to forecast media or public communication processes the development of a willingness and ability to reflect on and solve problems scientifically the development and strengthening of intercultural and foreign language skills in an internationalised media economy, governance and scientific networking. The programme imparts vocational qualifications by focusing on the training and deepening of team-based intercultural skills by means of: the combination of research and practice in the foreign language the possibility to actively contribute to central research projects within tandems courses on intercultural skills and academic English the integration of a research internship at the E.W. Scripps College of Communication in Athens, Ohio (US) a tandem programme with American students to assist and prepare for their stay abroad. The programme is partly taught in English and ends with a Master of Arts (MA) in Global Mass Communication and a Master of Science (MSc) in Journalism.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    • Academic degree or degree from a state or state-recognised university of cooperative education with a focus on German as a Foreign Language or a comparable study programme;
    • knowledge of German at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
    • students of partner universities who intend to complete a period of study at Leipzig University from a higher semester of study onwards, must prove their knowledge of German at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages when commencing their studies at Leipzig University;
    • knowledge of Arabic at A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages for applicants commencing their studies at Leipzig Universitys Herder .

    The Faculty will check whether the above requirements have been met and then issue an official notification. This serves as proof that the candidate meets the relevant admission requirements.

    English Program Requirements

    Academic degree: bachelors degree in Communication and Media Studies from Leipzig University or comparable relevant degree in communication studies, media studies, journalism etc. with at least 180 credits; proof of knowledge of English in the form of a TOEFL test with at a score of at least 100 (iBT).

    How to Apply

    1. Checking your documents

    If you wish to participate in the German course to prepare for studying, you will need to have what is known as a“direct”higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB),i.e.one that is valid for German universities.

    Please check in the databasewhether your school and university certificates entitle you to study in Germany.

    • Do you meet the requirements for the German course and does your previous education mean that you have a direct HZB? Then apply for the German course!

    2. Confirmation document

    Refugees may only apply free of charge to the German course to prepare for studying if they have a document confirming that they have sought advice. This is called a Beratungsbestätigung. In order to apply, please emailus a scan of your residence title and indicate which degree programmeyou would like to study. Please note that we cannot accept any responsibility for personal documents you send to us by email. Alternatively, you can also send us a copy of your documents by post. We will then send you a personalised confirmation document, which you will need to upload when you apply.

    4. Admission and entrance test

    Once uni-assist has successfully checked your documents, you will receive a letter of admission forthe German course from mid-August 2021. This will be sent to you via the AlmaWeb study portal. When you have been admitted, you can expect to be invited to an entrance test in September. The course starts in October 2021.
