    About

The research activities of the programme focus on cellular functions during embryonic development, organogenesis, and tissue regeneration. Genetic and biochemical approaches are used on whole organisms, centring around three topics: (i) modifications of proteins and RNAs as well as alternative splicing and microRNA-interactions; (ii) molecular mechanisms that control cell polarity and lead to the asymmetric localisation of RNAs and proteins involved in pattern formation, and inductive signals causing asymmetric microenvironments important for stem cell maintenance or cell differentiation; and (iii) identification of the genetic circuitries underlying organ-specific cell differentiation and cell function as well as organ homeostasis and circadian rhythms. Since cutting-edge research requires highly sophisticated technologies such as advanced fluorescence microscopy, generation of transgenic organisms, expression profiling and proteomics, an intensive exchange between the graduate students and principal investigators in this programme is essential for ensuring optimal progress in each research project.
