    About

    The Graduate Certificate in Health Protection develops professional competencies essential for the effective surveillance and response to public health incidents both in Australia and globally. This program equips you with the skills required to investigate and respond to outbreaks of communicable diseases and environmental health risks.

    You will gain a comprehensive understanding of environmental health concepts, the epidemiology of communicable diseases, core communicable disease control principles, the objectives of public health surveillance systems, and the legislation and regulation in place to manage public health risks.

    Developed in close collaboration with Public Health Services, Department of Health Tasmania, this course ensures that graduates are practice-ready and have strong connections with practitioners, employers, and systems addressing health protection.

    The Graduate Certificate in Health Protection is delivered online, incorporating real-world examples and practical assessments. Active discussion boards and online tutorials will support your learning, creating an engaging online environment. Practical, applicable topics and experienced lecturers with contemporary knowledge of health protection practices enhance the learning experience.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    For admission to this course you need either:

    1. A completed Australian Advanced Diploma or above, or approved equivalent#;
      OR
    2. at least two years' management experience*.

    You must provide evidence to support your eligibility for the degree, in particular a copy of your CV showing your work experience, and letters of reference from line managers or similar to confirm the work experience meets the minimum level for entry.

    #approved equivalent from any overseas institution as assessed by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (NOOSR).

    *minimum management experience in this case is defined as supervisory, team leader or business manager experience. In the case of applicants who have worked as a sole trader or consultant, additional evidence to support the level of experience must be provided.

    English Program Requirements

    • All methods of meeting University of Tasmania English language requirements have a validity period of 2 years unless involving a country specific qualification as listed below.
    • Each course offered by the University of Tasmania has a minimum English language requirement for entry as listed below. Applicants must also meet the academic entry requirements for each course.
    • Applicants who qualify from a University of Tasmania program, and intend to gain professional registration to become a practitioner in Australia, may need to meet the relevant Professional Accrediting Agency's English language registration standard.
    • In exceptional circumstances or cases not covered by the categories outlined below, multiple forms of evidence may be considered on a case by case basis by the Executive Director, Student Operations in consultation with the Director, Academic Quality and Standards.
    • The University reserves the right to require that any applicant be required to undergo a test of English language.

    Career

    This course has been designed to facilitate contemporary health protection practices for those working across the surge workforce in a range of areas and abilities. On completion of the course, you will be armed with the knowledge to effectively assist in surge capacity environments. This extends across the health profession, from allied health, general practitioners and nurses through to executive management and leadership groups.


    As a graduate of the Graduate Certificate in Health Protection, you will have demonstrated professional competencies in health protection practice with specific application to public health incidents relating to communicable diseases and environmental health. This course is relevant to people working within local, state, national or international government, hospital staff, residential care staff, non-government agencies, and emergency response workers.

    You will also be supported to continue study in the Master of Public Health.
