Human Rights & International Politics

The Masters in Human Rights & International Politics offers a thorough academic analysis of one of the most salient and pressing issues in the contemporary world: the place of individual human rights in a system of international relations in which states’ rights have traditionally been paramount.

2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in Social Sciences, Politics Law, Geography, History, Environmental Management, Theatre and Film Studies. Humanities subjects such as Philosophy, English literature, Languages and Theology would also be acceptable.

Work experience may be considered.

Applicants with academic backgrounds in Geography, History, Environmental Management, Theatre and Film Studies should provide a personal statement.

International students with academic qualifications below those required should contact our partner institution, Glasgow International College, who offer a range of pre-Masters courses.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.

• 59 with minimum 59 in all subtests
• Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test.

Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) and Cambridge Advanced English (CAE)

• 176 overall, no subtest less than 169
• Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test.

Oxford English Test

• 7 overall with no subtest less than 6
• Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test.

LanguageCert Academic SELT

• 70 overall with no subtest less than 60
• Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test.

Password Skills Plus

• 6.5 overall with no subtest less than 6.0
• Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test.

Trinity College Tests

• Integrated Skills in English II & III & IV: ISEII Distinction with Distinction in all sub-tests
• Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test.

University of Glasgow Pre-sessional courses

• Tests are accepted for 2 years following date of successful completion.

Alternatives to English Language qualification

• Degree from majority-English speaking country (as defined by the UKVI including Canada if taught in English)
  
  • students must have studied for a minimum of 2 years at Undergraduate level, or 9 months at Master's level, and must have completed their degree in that majority-English speaking country within the last 6 years.
• Undergraduate 2+2 degrees from majority-English speaking country (as defined by the UKVI including Canada if taught in English)
  
  • students must have completed their final two years study in that majority-English speaking country within the last 6 years.

For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use these tests to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level programmes. The University is also able to accept UKVI approved Secure English Language Tests (SELT) but we do not require a specific UKVI SELT for degree level programmes. We therefore still accept any of the English tests listed for admission to this programme.

We would strongly encourage you to consider the pre-sessional courses at the University of Glasgow's English for Academic Study (EAS) Unit. Our Pre-sessional courses are the best way to bring your English up to entry level for University study. Our courses give you:

This programme is uniquely interdisciplinary across law and social sciences with a strong focus on major contemporary challenges, aiding students in their preparation for future careers in the sector. Career opportunities and pathways Following completion of this programme, you will be equipped to enter the global workforce through many avenues. You will gain a variety of skills including presenting, group work and writing policy briefs and a depth of cross-sector knowledge. Graduates have gone on to establish international careers working in human rights and international politics, from positions within government/foreign ministry and intergovernmental organisations to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and think tanks. Others have gone on to use their skillset in the private sector, or have gone on to complete PhD study and begin academic careers. Professional development Throughout the programme students will engage with practice and learn from those working in the field. To improve programme learning and career development, students can attend our specialised practitioner series. This brings speakers at the forefront of the field into the university, and students will be able to network and engage with their particular field of expertise. Students will also have the opportunity to present work in front of representatives from the European parliament. Our programme has close clinks with the Glasgow Human Rights Network (GHRN) which brings together researchers, activists, NGOs and policy makers in human rights who work with migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Scotland. Students also have the chance to get involved with the Glasgow Refugee, Asylum and Migration Network (GRAMNET) which carries out research on migration refugees and the asylum process. To help with learning development and provide exposure to practice, students can also take in an optional study trip to Geneva. The itinerary includes visits to a wide range of human rights organisations with pre-trip preparation work involved to develop the skills and insights necessary for a successful trip experience and your future career.
