International & European Studies: ONLINE Summer School on European Politics and Human Rights

    About

In the aftermath of the Second World War, for the first time in European history, former enemies created a political union in order to coordinate their economic and political activities, and to establish a unique supra-national system protecting citizens’ rights. Over the past decades, this unique cooperation of sovereign nation states gradually led to the emergence of an individual rights-based supranational political system: the European Union (EU). But the past years have seen the EU facing more and more criticism from various sides and a plethora of challenges threaten the European community and what held its societies together for a long time. The Online Summer School on "European Politics and Human Rights" will deal with the historical and political dynamics of European Integration and cover the current challenges Europe and the EU face today: Brexit, political fragmentation and radicalisation, migration, the pandemic and more. First, this course will introduce students to the EU as a political system, characterised by the separation of powers principle, with significant executive, legislative, and judicial powers. It will cover how policies are made in this unique multi-layered system of governance, and it will discuss current political challenges. Second, classes will then focus on the issue of human rights in Europe, covering a wide range of topics including an introduction to the theory and implementation of human rights and to EU politics to assess and protect them by significant executive and legislative powers. Students will be confronted with authentic problems and cases and will discuss and analyse the problems occurring when trying to defend basic rights. The so-called European Refugee Crisis will also be a special topic of discussion. The Online Summer School will be based on online material that you can access at any time using Tübingen university’s Moodle system as well as on live online discussions including video conferences via Zoom (about two hours each). The latter will take place at pre-set times, either at 9am (German time) or 2pm (German time), depending on the cohort / group a student is assigned to based on the time zone they are in. Hence, by combining synchronous and asynchronous tools of teaching and learning, you have the chance to gain valuable insights into new cultures and countries, share your perspectives with international classmates and learn more about Europe, the EU, and its human rights system.
