    Land and Water Systems

    About

Land and water are essential resources required to sustain human needs, including food security, maintenance of environmental goods and services, and all forms of useable energy. Managing land and water as an integrated system provides a framework to aid society to achieve the goals of an improved quality of life, a healthy environment and human equity in an era of global climate change and urban expansion.

The goal of the innovative Master of Land and Water Systems program is to offer a professional degree that will serve both practicing resource managers, and recent graduates from cognate undergraduate academic programs, the necessary credentials to address the emerging concerns of land and water resources conservation and management.

The MLWS degree includes 33 credits of coursework, consisting of 21 credits of required courses plus 12 credits of electives. Each student will be required to register for LWS 548 (6 credits) and complete a "Major Project".

    Career

There is demand in Canada and around the world for professionals who can understand and analyze the relationships between the resource sectors and the realities of human population growth, increased demand on land and water systems and the added uncertainty brought by climate change. This demand has been rising due to the prevalence and complexity of issues related to land degradation, food and water security, as well as the global concern of sustaining ecological biodiversity and services. Frustrations have been expressed by narrowly trained professionals in their abilities to address the dynamics of systems management issues and to acquire and apply the necessary scientific skills in a more integrated and holistic manner. Governments and private industry, both in developed and developing countries, need professionals with resource management skills and knowledge of institutions, policies and ecological constraints of the resource sectors. The MLWS degree is designed to meet the needs of resource practitioners in these sectors.

    Potential Career Paths include:

    Agricultural Representatives, Consultants and Specialists

Environmental Consultants for Natural Resource Development; Government

Utilities Managers (Director of water pollution control, Director, water supply)

    Non-Government Organizations

    How to Apply

    Information Collected

The application form will collect information in the following sections:

    • Use of information
    • Personal & contact details
    • Academic history
    • Test scores
    • Funding
    • Experience and interests
    • Additional questions
    • References

    Tips

    • You will have the ability to page through the various sections of the application form. It is a good idea to review the full application before you begin in order to get a sense of what information is required from you.
    • When navigating between sections your information will be saved during an active session. However, the application will log you out after a certain time, i.e. your active session ends. At that point you can lose data as it won't save when navigating to the next section. To avoid data loss, we recommend drafting answers in a Word document or other software. You can then paste long-form answers into the application system when ready.
    • You should make sure to review your entire application before you proceed past the Application Summary page. After you proceed past this point, no further edits can be made to your application.
    • Generally speaking if your application components are prepared please allow 2 hours to complete the online form.

    Accessing the Application

    • To apply to UBC, you must have a Campus-Wide Login (CWL). You'll need your CWL username and password to check the status of your application and access all of the University’s online systems throughout your time at UBC.
    • You can only have one CWL account. If you create multiple CWL accounts, the application system will flag your account and you won't be able to complete required steps until after your account has been reviewed.
      • If you have applied in previous years to UBC (at either the undergraduate or graduate level) or attended UBC via exchange agreements, visiting programs or similar, you most likely have a CWL account already. You have to retrieve your account details prior to applying.
      • If you have an inactive CWL account, you need to contact UBC IT to re-activate it instead of creating a new account.
    • Applicants will not be allowed to create more than one application for the same program in the same session. This means that you will be unable to delete your application to start a new one. Applicants should, therefore, be mindful that the information they enter onto the application form is accurate and complete. You can apply for multiple different programs on both campuses.
    • The online application requires the use of the latest version of Chrome or Firefox with cookies and JavaScript enabled. Please note that the use of Internet Explorer, Edge and Safari are not recommended and can result in the loss of data and significantly delays on the submission of your application(s).
