About

The current, modern orientation of the traditional natural sciences biology and chemistry are more fascinating than ever before, particularly when taught and learnt in an interdisciplinary manner as life science. Life science is a very interdisciplinary scientific area that addresses the chemical and biological foundations of biological systems and their molecular and cellular interactions. Consequently, life science focuses on cellular systems (single cells, consortia and organs) and their molecular interaction with each other and within cell systems. For this reason, the degree programme in Life Science is taught in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary manner, involving content from chemistry and biology focusing on four areas: bioprocessing technology; molecular biology; bioinformatics; and the biology and chemistry of natural products. The aim is for students to gain a basic understanding of the processes and organisation of life in single cells, groups of cells and organs, and to make these insights available for industrial use. Life Science was one of the first of these interdisciplinary degree programmes; students are trained with a strong emphasis on practical application, preparing them for a career in the life science industry. In addition, students on the Masters degree programme in Life Science acquire the skills required to produce academic work independently, enabling them to embark on a doctorate.

Students should understand the fundamentals of Life Science and must be interested in research-orientated relations.

For master's degree programmes with restricted admission, places shall be allocated according to the universityâ€™s own selection procedure, if there are more applicants fulfilling the admission requirements than there are places available. The study objective is for students to gain a scientific education that also qualifies them to enter a profession in chemical and biotechnological research, production and quality control. The broadly based programme qualifies and enables graduates to work in most areas of research, R&D and quality control in the chemical and biotech industry. In addition, students have the skills required to embark on doctoral studies.

How to Apply

You can use our online application portal to enrol any time between 1 June and 30 September. To be able to do this, you will need a qualification for admission to higher education. At the end of the online application, you will automatically be forwarded to a cover letter (the so-called application for enrollment). Sign this application for enrollment (handwritten or digital) and put it together with the required documents into one PDF document, which you can then upload using the upload link provided. The required documents include your qualification for admission to higher education (e.g. Abitur) and any other supporting documents such as practical training certificates or evidence of language proficiency. We also need proof of your health insurance and evidence that you have paid the semester fee. At the end of the online application, all required documents are listed and must be uploaded as a scan of the original documents by September 30th, 11:59 p.m. Please do not forget to upload your photo for the LeibnizCard . You can find information on this in the application for enrollment at the end of the online application. In September, you will receive your enrolment documents, an invitation to the welcome event for new students and information about any preparatory courses that may be offered. Please note that some degree programmes offer preparatory courses well before term starts.
