    Life Sciences Biology

    About

Biology remains at the center of the life sciences, which are considered the leading sciences of the 21st century. Biology is the study of living systems and integrates physical and chemical processes into a highly complex dynamic system that incorporates everything from the biochemistry of living cells to organs and organisms through to ecosystems.

The degree program provides broad and fundamental orientation in the life sciences without becoming prematurely limited to specific aspects of their application. Building on the mathematical, physical and chemical fundamentals learned thus far, it provides an introduction to all relevant biological disciplines, as well as the methodological approaches and technological accomplishments in this field. In subsequent semesters an integrative approach is encouraged and, at the same time, students are able to develop their personal strengths in elective courses. You acquire the ability to analyze and abstract complex biological systems and relationships, as well as develop questions and approaches to finding solutions.

The degree program is intended to counteract premature specialization, so as to generate the all-rounder graduates of the future: They will be qualified to work on the widest range of research projects and, in the process, always incorporate the perspective of system analysis.

The degree program in Biology, the core science concerning the molecular and systemic understanding of biological processes, trains specialists from both a research-oriented and applied perspective in the life sciences, where the discipline is the central driver of progress. With its wide-ranging approach to the observation of biological systems, the discipline constitutes the generative center of all essentially bioscientific lines of research, out of which new specialist fields and areas of application are continuously developed.

The aim of the degree program is a comprehensive understanding of systems – from the biomolecule to the ecosystem – and extensive methodological expertise.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

First of all, you need a higher education entrance qualification to study at TUM. This can either be a qualified secondary school diploma or sufficient professional qualification.
    • Your schooling must comprise 12 consecutive school years.
    • You have to fulfill the curricular requirements set out by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (Kultusministerkonferenz). For more information, please consult the legally binding regulations can be found in the  resolution of the Kultusministerkonferenz (German PDF, 156kb).
    • Please note that only an IB with German A as Higher Level is recognized as proof of German language skills. Otherwise, you need so supply separate proof of sufficient German skills with your application at TUM.

    English Program Requirements

All degree programs at TUM Informatics require proof of proficiency in German, English, or both.

Check TUM’s central admissions website for information on accepted language proficiency certificates here.

Please remember that you often will need to sign up for language tests several months in advance.

Should you have no knowledge in German at all, you should plan to devote approximately 9 to 12 months to intensive courses in order to reach the required level. You must be able to prove proficiency in the relevant language for your program in order to be admitted.

For Master's applications at the department of Informatics: if the language of instruction of your Bachelor's degree was English (100%), this can be accepted as English language proof for the Master's application.
Bachelor's thesis written in English can also be accepted as English proof. In this case a document from your university (
