About

Understanding biological systems often necessitates a solid background in physical and mathematical methods. TheÂ Integrated Life Sciences (ILS) study programme is an interdisciplinary degreeÂ programme addressing biological questions. ILS students acquire in-depthÂ knowledge of mathematical and physical methods to analyse and describe biologicalÂ processes quantitatively. Structure-function relationships of proteins, DNAÂ sequence analysis and complex interactions between biomoleculesÂ or cells are typical areas of application. The international MSc programme ILS is aimed particularly at graduates ofÂ interdisciplinary biophysical study courses, but also at graduates with a BSc inÂ related disciplines such as physics, biology or (bio)mathematics with aÂ strong interest in interdisciplinary biological questions. Students will obtainÂ advanced knowledge and methodological skills with a focus on two of theÂ three different directions: Mathematical Modelling and Systems Biology - Bioimaging and Biophysics - Biological Structures and Processes. A mentoring system will support all students in choosing the appropriate moduleÂ groups and elective courses.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to have a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification. We will check your qualification for our degree course in a selection process. You should provide proof of specialised and methodological knowledge of mathematics, molecular biology or physics. Your suitability will be assessed, based on the content of your present (or prior) study programme. Your study results are of major importance, however, in case there is any doubt concerning your qualification, you will be invited to a personal interview. If the applicant does not have a Bachelor's qualification that is clearly equivalent to the Bachelor of Integrated Life Sciences or if the mark of the BSc is 2.6 or worse, the applicant must pass the admission test. If required, the admission test will take place as soon as possible after the candidate's formal application. The test consists of an oral examination of about 30 minutes (A Skype interview is possible upon request.). The test shall determine if the applicant will be able to reach the goals of the study course independently and responsibly on a scientific base. It will test for the basic required knowledge in Biology, Mathematics, and Physics. The test will be held by the admissions committee of the ILS programme. The examination date will be announced at least one week prior to the test. The applicant must pay for any expenses that may arise. The applicant will be graded on a "pass" or "fail" basis. The admissions committee can impose additional requirements for the admittance. You can repeat the test one time within a year. A second repetition is not possible.
