    About

The Management, Employment and Organisation (MEO) Section is home to a number of research groups and centres and undertakes research in three broad areas:

    1. Organisation Studies
    2. Employment Relations
    3. Public Sector Management

As well as promoting research of an international quality, the section aims to deliver research-led teaching of an outstanding quality and to provide a supportive environment for the development of academic researchers and educators. Our researchers have a very strong publishing, advisory and consulting profile, providing advice and reports for a broad range of corporate and other clients. Recent users of MEO research include:

    1. The International Labour Organisation
    2. Trades Union Congress
    3. The European Commission
    4. The International Transport Workers Federation
    5. Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service
    6. Welsh Government
    7. Office of the Deputy Prime Minister

The Management, Employment and Organisation route has Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) recognition. This route encompasses a full range of expertise, but the following areas are of particular strength:

    • Employment Relations
    • Organisational Studies (especially interdisciplinary perspectives)
    • Human Resource Management
    • Critical Management Studies
    • Public Sector Improvement
    • Entrepreneurship.

The programme is for those that wish to explore an area relation to Management, Organisation and Employment in further depth, but more importantly for those that want to undertake a formal qualification in research. The PhD programme will prepare you either for a career as a leading academic scholar or to excel in business practitioning or senior public policy decision making. Along the way you will be encouraged to publish, before completing an innovative thesis that contributes to academic debate in your chosen field. We will offer you a place on our PhD programme because we believe you have the talent, background and initiative to complete the programme and meet these goals.

    Distinctive features

    • Teaching opportunities may be available, depending on section requirements. This is reviewed on a year to year basis.
    • The section runs a seminar series attracting visiting speakers from around the world. We also have regular visiting international academics. These visitors give PhD students regular access to leading academics from around the world.
    • Several section research projects have made a direct impact on decisions made by private sector organisations, employers' federations, trade union bodies, and government agencies. This impact-led research reflects the strong links that members of the section have with local, national and international employers and regulatory bodies.
