    Master of Arts in Education (MA)

    The MA program participates in the collaborative program in Feminist and Gender Studies at the master's level.

    The Master of Arts in Education Program (MA) is intended for candidates who wish to undertake research in a specific domain of educational studies. It is offered in the following five concentrations:

    • Counselling psychology
    • Health professions education
    • Leadership, evaluation, curriculum and policy studies
    • Societies, cultures and languages
    • Studies in teaching and learning

    The MA program participates in the collaborative program in Feminist and Gender Studies at the master's level. For more information, see the Admission Requirements” section.

    The Collaborative program in Feminist and Gender Studies at the master's level is designed for students from selected disciplines in arts, education, health sciences, law, social sciences, and counselling and spirituality (Saint Paul University), who have an interest in feminist and gender studies. These students have the opportunity to combine advanced studies in their primary program with analyses from a feminist and gender studies perspective.     Entry Requirements

    Master's with Collaborative Specialization

    Students admitted to the collaborative program in Feminist and Gender Studies at the master's level must meet the requirements for a master's degree in their primary program as well as the requirements of the Feminist and Gender Studies program. Normally, the Feminist and Gender Studies courses are recognized as partial fulfillment of the requirements of the student's primary program, in which case the passing grade in the relevant FEM course or courses is the same as that specified for the primary program.

    All compulsory courses must be taken at the Faculty of Education. For any course taken outside the Faculty, students must obtain approval from the program director at least one month before the start of classes.

    Taking into account the student's previous studies, the Faculty reserves the right to add to the program of studies any course(s) deemed necessary. Normally, these additional requirements are specified at the beginning of the program.

    This course should be taken at the beginning of the program.

    Students must complete the two compulsory courses in feminist and gender studies before their first enrollment for the thesis.

    5

    Submission of a written research proposal that meets with the approval of a thesis committee. Students must present a seminar following the approval of the research proposal.

    6

    The thesis must be on a topic related to women, gender, feminism or sexualities. The proposed topic must be approved by the Feminst and Gender Studies Graduate Committee as well as by the student’s primary program. The thesis must demonstrate knowledge of feminist scholarship in the field or fields appropriate to the topic, and of feminist methodologies where applicable.

    Registration of Thesis Topic

    Master's students must register their thesis topic by the end of the second term of studies.

    Thesis Supervision and Thesis Submission

    The thesis supervisor must possess Feminist and Gender Studies and/or feminist expertise. Joint supervision by a professor from the participating unit and a professor chosen by the Feminist and Gender Studies Graduate Committee may be appropriate in some cases. The thesis must be approved by the Feminist and Gender Studies Graduate Committee as well as by the primary program. Usually the thesis is submitted to Feminist and Gender Studies by the end of the third term of the first year of studies. One of the examiners for the thesis must be a person approved by the Feminist and Gender Studies Graduate Committee.

    The program director ensures that all procedures for thesis supervision and submission in effect for graduate studies and for the Program Council of the Faculty are followed.

    At the time of admission, the Faculty of Education designates a thesis adviser in consultation with the professor concerned.

    Fast-Track from Master’s to PhD

    Exceptional students who are enrolled in the MA program may, under certain conditions, be permitted to transfer to the PhD program without completing a master's thesis. For details, see under

    English Program Requirements

    If you’re applying for an English-language program and have not completed at least three years of full-time study in an institution where English is the only language of instruction (aside from in language courses) in a country where English is an official language, you must submit your official score in one of the following language tests. The official results must be sent directly to us online from the test centre.

    In order to be considered for a program offered in English at the University of Ottawa, you must demonstrate that you are sufficiently proficient in the language to follow a postsecondary academic program. Please note that citizenship is not considered when evaluating English proficiency. To show that your English proficiency is at the academic level required for university studies, provide proof of either:

    • Postsecondary studies in English; or
    • Last three years of high school taken in English (Grades 10, 11 or 12)

    Remember: Language requirements are not based on citizenship. They are based on your country of study.

    How to Apply

    • Apply online through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC), by completing form 105.
    • Declare all your current and previous postsecondary studies, completed or not, even if they are not related to your application. Failure to do so may lead to the cancellation of your application or the withdrawal of your offer of admission at any time.
