what you will study

There are two options for specialisation:

• Professional Learning – open to International students enrolled in the TESOL specialisation.
• Teacher Retraining – for a second qualification in Mathematics Teaching, Physics Teaching or TESOL.

Our retraining specialisations are structured according to the Subject Content Knowledge Requirements Policy of the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA).

Note: Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the University of Newcastle’s English Language Proficiency requirements.

Applicants who do not speak English as a first language must demonstrate that they meet the University's English proficiency requirement. Further information regarding English language proficiency requirements can be found at the English Language Proficiency for Admission Policy.

In the application portal, you can enter the program you wish to study and upload relevant documents needed as part of your application. It is recommended you submit your application a minimum of 12 weeks before your intended semester of trimester start date.

This program prepares you with the skills and knowledge to build on your current teaching experience and further your career in education. You will graduate with an advanced understanding of the values and ethical principles that underlie the broad field of education and the conduct of various research traditions in complex settings in an ethical, collaborative, professional and accountable manner. You will enter the professional workforce with the ability to articulate an educational perspective in regards to the broader community issues of ethical conduct, equity and social justice.

You'll graduate with qualification in a second teaching area, in either Maths, TESOL, or from 2026 Physics.

Possible career paths may include:

• Higher Education Teacher within TAFEs and university sectors
• Education Consultant or Advisor within TAFEs universities or schools
• Specialist Teacher in areas such as TESOL, secondary maths and secondary physics
• Leadership, Coordination, Specialist or Professional Development positions in school systems.
