    Master of Public Management (MPM)

    About

Governments and public institutions all over the world are being increasingly challenged to provide high-quality services and to respond swiftly to citizens' needs. The complexity of organisational and policy change requires professionals to have a new understanding of public service issues and a broad range of skills. Particularly in developing and transition countries, public administration requires decision-makers with interdisciplinary skills who are capable of solving problems in management and communication, thereby helping to achieve public administration reform. The executive degree is part of the Potsdam Center for Policy and Management (PCPM), a national and international centre of competence in research, training and consulting for the public sector and thus part of the university’s excelling profile in Public Sector and Governance research. Throughout the year, MPM students acquire foundational knowledge in Public Management and Applied Policy Analysis, complemented by practical trainings, e.g., in leadership and management as well as communication and research skills. Designed to meet the demand for specialised managerial staff, the curriculum of the postgraduate Master of Public Management (MPM) programme, offered since 1999, is offered with four different specialisation modules and opportunities: Courses in the area of Public Policy and Administration aim to equip public sector professionals with the analytical and practical skills required to meet society's need for improved efficiency and effectiveness in public management. With a similar orientation, the specialisation module Global Public Policy provides the framework to meet the challenges of managing public policies that transcend national borders. A specialisation in Environment, Sustainability and Geosciences allows students to focus a part of their studies on managing risks emerging from natural disasters and climate change. Courses in the area of Digitalisation are set out to mediate knowledge on the interface between Public Management and Digitalisation. These courses enable students to identify potentials for digital solutions in the public sector and to learn about e-government as well as change management and digital transformation procedures. Broader than the conventional curriculum for Public Administration Studies and Law, the interdisciplinary programme incorporates the study of International Public Policy, Public Administration, Public Management, GeoGovernance, Political Economy, and Management Skills. The MPM takes a multidisciplinary approach and draws on the expertise of faculty members from the disciplines of Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, Public Management, Business Administration, Economics, Public Finance and Law. All courses require students to reflect on public management issues through a wide range of perspectives. The academic programme is complemented by practical insights into the work of experts and professionals through a number of extracurricular activities, such as additional management trainings, site visits and a Project Lab. The MPM core faculty includes professors from the University of Potsdam and distinguished scholars from Belgium, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, among others.
