    Program Description

    The goal of the master's program is to educate enrolled nurses for an advanced practice role and/or doctoral studies. Graduates of the program are prepared to assume leadership roles in improving the quality of nursing care in various health care settings. The program provides rigorous academic preparation based on theory and research to address health-related phenomena experienced by individuals, families, groups, aggregates and communities.

    Francophones from minority communities on the Canadian west and east coasts and in the Territories benefit from additional privileges thanks to the Consortium national de formation en santé (CNFS). CNFS is a nationally-represented organization that comprises ten university- and college-level academic institutions offering French-language education in various health-related fields.

    The department offers a collaborative program in Feminist and Gender Studies at the master's level.

    Collaborative Program Description

    The collaborative program in feminist and gender studies at the master's level is designed for students from selected disciplines in arts, education, health sciences, law, social sciences, and counselling and spirituality (Saint Paul University), who have an interest in feminist and gender studies. These students have the opportunity to combine advanced studies in their primary program with analyses from a feminist and gender studies perspective. The degree awarded is a master's degree in the primary program with a .

    Students in the collaborative program must meet the requirements for a master's degree in their primary program as well as the requirements of the feminist and gender studies program.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    To be eligible, candidates must:

    • Have completed a bachelor’s degree in nursing (equivalent to the degree offered by the University of Ottawa) with at least 70% (B) average.

    Note: International candidates must check the admission equivalencies for the diploma they received in their country of origin.

    • Have successfully completed an introductory statistics course (or equivalent) within the last six (6) years.

    This course must be completed prior to commencing the program or, if not, during the first term in the program.

    • Have a current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario.

    The equivalent of two years of recent nursing practice as an enrolled nurse, preferably in the chosen area of concentration, is strongly recommended.

    • Have a background in feminist and gender studies, that is, a minimum of two undergraduate level courses or one graduate level course on women, gender, feminism or sexualities. Students who do not have an adequate background may be eligible to our Special Policy for Admissions.
    • Identify at least one professor who is willing to supervise your research and thesis. We recommend that you contact potential thesis supervisors as soon as possible.

    Language Requirements

    Applicants must be able to understand and fluently speak the language of instruction (French or English) in the program to which they are applying. Proof of linguistic proficiency may be required.

    Applicants whose first language is neither French nor English must provide proof of proficiency in the language of instruction.

    Notes:

    • Candidates are responsible for any fees associated with the language tests.
    • Students may be required to consult websites in English and/or to read English-language articles related to their respective areas of study. Those taking courses within the Francophone stream should therefore have at least a passive command of the English language, meaning that they are able to understand both written and spoken English.

    • Admissions are governed by the academic regulations in effect for graduate studies.
    • Candidates must apply to the primary program and indicate in their application for admission to the master’s program in nursing that they wish to be accepted into the collaborative specialization in feminist and gender studies. In exceptional cases, students could commence their specialization in feminist and gender studies in their second term of their primary program.
    • To be accepted in the collaborative program in feminist and gender studies at the master's level, applicants must first be accepted to the master's primary program.

    English Program Requirements

    If you’re applying for an English-language program and have not completed at least three years of full-time study in an institution where English is the only language of instruction (aside from in language courses) in a country where English is an official language, you must submit your official score in one of the following language tests. The official results must be sent directly to us online from the test centre.

    In order to be considered for a program offered in English at the University of Ottawa, you must demonstrate that you are sufficiently proficient in the language to follow a postsecondary academic program. Please note that citizenship is not considered when evaluating English proficiency. To show that your English proficiency is at the academic level required for university studies, provide proof of either:

    • Postsecondary studies in English; or
    • Last three years of high school taken in English (Grades 10, 11 or 12)

    Remember: Language requirements are not based on citizenship. They are based on your country of study.
