    Mechanical Engineering

    About

    What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical Engineering is the discipline that applies engineering physics, mathematics, and materials science principles to design, analyse, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. In simpler terms, it's the study of objects and systems in motion, making our world efficient and innovative.

    Mechanical Engineering Specialisations

Mechanical Engineering is a vast field, but some of the most common specialisations include:

    • Thermodynamics: The study of energy, heat, and work.
    • Robotics: The fusion of computer science with mechanics.
    • Biomechanics: Marrying biology with mechanical principles.
    • Aerospace: Design and development of aircraft and spacecraft.
    • Automotive design: Crafting efficient and innovative vehicles.

Both Bachelor's and Master's programmes offer these specialisations, allowing students to refine their areas of interest.

What will you learn during a Mechanical Engineering programme?

Mechanical Engineering serves as the backbone of the engineering industry. Within this course, you'll:

    • Grasp the foundational theories of motion, energy, and force.
    • Design and test mechanical systems and tools for various applications.
    • Use cutting-edge software for simulations and design.
    • Engage in practical workshops and hands-on projects.

Noteworthy courses you might encounter include:

    • Fluid Mechanics: Study of liquids and gases in motion.
    • Machine Design: Creation of new and innovative machinery.
    • Control Systems: Understanding automatic regulating systems.
    • Thermodynamics: Analysing energy transformations.
    • Materials Science: Exploring the properties and applications of different materials.

Mechanical Engineering is a good degree offering versatile skill sets such as problem-solving, technical proficiency, and design expertise, which are in demand across industries, not just the core sectors.

Skills required for a degree in Mechanical Engineering

To thrive in this domain, you should have strong analytical thinking, an aptitude for problem-solving, creativity in design, and a good grasp of mathematics and physics. Mechanical Engineering degree requirements typically entail a strong foundation in STEM subjects during your pre-university education.

What can you do with a Mechanical Engineering degree?

From designing cutting-edge tech to optimising existing systems, mechanical engineers have a plethora of career opportunities:

    • Automotive Engineer: Designing the next generation of vehicles.
    • HVAC Engineer: Focusing on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
    • Robotics Engineer: Crafting intelligent machines.
    • Aerospace Engineer: Venturing into aircraft and spacecraft design.
    • Renewable Energy Consultant: Steering the world towards sustainable energy sources.

With a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, you're set for roles in design, testing, and manufacturing. Opting for a Master's in Mechanical Engineering broadens prospects for research, development, and even managerial roles in top-tier companies.

Considering jobs you can get with a Mechanical Engineering degree, this discipline offers some of the most varied and rewarding careers. The career after the most common specialisations in Mechanical Engineering can often be in industries pioneering the future, from space exploration to sustainable energy solutions.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Students with a high school diploma or its equivalent from outside Jordan can enroll in higher education institutions directly through websites of public and private universities or intermediate community colleges based on their averages. Universities implement the credit hours system, which allows students to choose courses according to their study plan.

Students wishing to enroll in a master's program must hold a bachelor's degree. Furthermore, students who wish to enroll in doctoral programs must hold a master's degree.

In addition, students wishing to enroll in postgraduate programs are required to provide a certificate confirming their English proficiency level in a TOEFL or IELTS exam. They could also demonstrate a certain proficiency level in French or German. Lastly, they could take an English language exam held by the higher education institution they apply in.

In the event that the student fails to prove the required level of English, German or French, or fails the English equivalency exam, they may study a qualifying program in English at the university where they undertake additional six credit hours; he/she must score a minimum grade that varies according to their specialization.
