MEng Mechanical Engineering with Industrial Experience

    About

    • The first English university to offer an engineering degree, we've pioneered the way since 1824!
    • One of the few most targeted universities by top graduate employers (THE Graduate Market 2024) with excellent links to industry
    • Ranked 4th in the UK for Mechanical Engineering (QS World Rankings 2022)
    • Accredited for professional registration by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers - on this MEng you will also meet the academic requirements towards becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng)
    • You'll learn in our world-class £400m Home of Engineering and Materials , plus facilities including wind tunnels and laser laboratories
    • This five year course is identical to Mechanical Engineering MEng but has a year out in industry (typically after Year 3 - students then return to complete Year 4) offering a great sought-after competitive edge

This course is identical to the Mechanical Engineering MEng, but includes an additional year spent working in industry.

The MEng Mechanical Engineering will give you an excellent grounding in the knowledge and experience of the most fundamental of all engineering disciplines, preparing you for a variety of careers in engineering, technology, business and management.

Many students find it highly beneficial, both to their university education and to their subsequent employability, to integrate a substantial period in industry within your degree. We offer you the chance to do this with a structured placement year in industry, which would normally be completed after the third year of the Mechanical Engineering degree course (with students returning after their placement to complete the 4th year of study). However, you may opt to organise your placement after the second year.

During the placement year you will be supervised by the host company and your progress is monitored by the university.

We use a variety of teaching styles that reflect the diversity of topics covered in modern mechanical engineering, and you will develop the range of skills and expertise that a professional engineer must possess.

As in BEng, the third year features an individual project - you will undertake a major investigative project by yourself. This may require scientific experiments and investigations. The successful completion of this project is a necessary condition for eventual professional registration.

The final year of the MEng features a major design group project, as well as further opportunities of choosing specialist subjects, in addition to core units.
