    MEngSc in Electrical Power Networks

    About

    The modern power system is radically changing, as it integrates more renewable generation, accommodates the growing electrification of transport & heating, and embraces new smart grid control approaches. This 1 year MEngSc in Electrical Power Networks is specifically designed to give you a fundamental understanding of the design and operation of electrical power networks in the context of the transition to a more sustainable energy system.

    The programme is taught by world renowned academics with a strong track record in power systems and energy research. Teaching is underpinned and supported by the research agenda of the UCD Energy Institute which is working towards a net zero carbon future. The programme will provide you with advanced training in various aspects of electrical engineering and equip you with the skills required to pursue a career in the rapidly evolving power system and smart grid sectors. If you are a mathematically strong engineering student who is interested in being part of the transition to a more sustainable future and you are seeking a professional career in the power system and smart grid sectors, then this programme is ideal for you.

    Delivered by a highly research-active School composed of many internationally high-profile academics, including five IEEE Fellows. This programme is also taught by academics from the world-leading Energy Institute for the integration of renewables into power systems and energy systems.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    • A 4-year bachelor’s degree with a minimum upper second class honours (NFQ level 8) or international equivalent in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, power systems, power electronics, and energy-related subjects. Applicants should have studied: Power System Analysis, Electrical Machines, Power Electronics
    • Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0 in each element), or equivalent.
    • Students who do not meet the IELTS requirement may wish to consider taking the Pre-Sessional or Pre-Masters Pathway. Full details https://www.ucd.ie/alc/programmes/pathways/
    You may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), as UCD recognises formal, informal, and/or experiential learning. RPL may be awarded to gain Admission and/or credit exemptions on a programme. Please visit the UCD Registry RPL web page for further information. Any exceptions are also listed on this webpage.

    English Program Requirements

    International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

    Taught Master's: A minimum overall score of 7.0 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version. The non-academic version is not accepted.

    Research Programmes: A minimum overall score of 6.5 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band on the Academic Version. The non-academic version is not accepted.

    IELTS Indicator: A minimum overall score of 7.0 over all components and a minimum of 6.0 in each band. This test will be accepted for 2022/23 and 2023/24 intake.

    Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

    Taught Master's: A minimum score of 100 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section.

    Research Programmes: A minimum score of 90 is required in the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) with a score of at least 20 in each section.

    TOEFL iBT Home: A minimum score of 100 is required with a score of at least 20 in each section.

    Duolingo Test of English (DET)

    UCD has approved the use of the Duolingo Test of English (DET) for the 2024/25 intake.
    An overall score of 130 will be accepted with no section below 110.

    Please note that this does not apply to the CEMS MiM / MSc in International Management. In the case of the CEMS MiM the Duolingo English Test will not be accepted.

    By completing the MEngSc Electrical Power Networks programme, you will become a graduate with power systems expertise, whose rare skills will be attractive to a wide variety of technical and managerial roles in the electrical utility and smart grid sectors on an international scale, e.g. ABB, Alstom, EDF, EirGrid, EPRI, ESB, GE, NREL, Siemens.
