Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics (B.S.)/Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics (M.S.)

    About

The program focuses on biophysical approaches to determine the structure of macromolecules and macromolecular assemblies. Enrollment allows access to the X-ray facilities at the nearby Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, one of the world's most intense X-ray sources.

The molecular biochemistry and biophysics program complements more traditional graduate programs in biology, chemistry, and physics by offering an integrated, molecular-based approach to understanding biological problems, taking insights from all three disciplines.

The program focuses on biophysical approaches to determine the structure of macromolecules and macromolecular assemblies. Faculty advisers are chosen from any participating department, regardless of affiliation to a particular discipline. A particular strength of the participating faculty is structural studies.

Enrolling in the M.S. in Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics program will allow access to the state-of-the-art X-ray facilities at the nearby Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory, one of the most intense X-ray sources in the world.

Students must be at least one full-time semester (12 credit hours) away from undergraduate degree completion in order to apply.

Applicants are required to have a minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0; however, please consult individual departments for specific minimum GPA requirements.

    English Program Requirements

International students who fit into any of the following categories will be considered to have met the requirement:

    • Residents of a country where English is the only official language and who is a native English speaker
    • Graduates of U.S. high schools
    • Completed the equivalent of Iowa State’s English 150 or 250 with a grade of B or better at an accredited U.S. 2 year or 4 year college or university.

    CONDITIONAL ADMISSION

If you meet all admission requirements but do not meet our English proficiency requirements, Iowa State offers conditional admission to attend our Intensive English and Orientation Program (IEOP). If you would like to enroll in IEOP, on the application choose "I would like to enroll in Iowa State’s IEOP program before I begin the academic study.”

    Career

An advanced degree opens more career opportunities to higher-paying jobs. Careers associated with molecular biochemistry and biophysics include:

    • Analytical chemist
    • Biomedical scientist
    • Health care scientist, clinical biochemistry
    • Biotechnician
    • Cytologist
