Overview

This course is designed to develop your passion for the field and inspire your vision of creating a safer and healthier workplace for workers and the community. Our graduates are creative, innovative, confident and progressive individuals capable of and committed to upholding the standards and ethical values of the profession.

In this course you will develop strong theoretical and practical OHS skills and discover new knowledge and novel ways of solving problems. In your final semester you will complete an original research project under the guidance of one of our experienced staff.

It is possible to exit this course with a Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety once you have completed certain units.

Please note: These courses are not available to international students studying in Australia. International students can only take this course externally (online) in their country of origin.

What you'll learn

• apply and integrate the knowledge and principles of occupational health and safety and practical skills required for the prevention of injury and occupational disease in the workplace environment
• apply logical and rational processes to critically analyse issues relevant to OHS and think creatively in the generation of solutions to problems
• develop information literacy skills with access, evaluation and synthesis of relevant information and evidence from a range of resources available in the field of OHS and use appropriate information and communication technology practices
• communicate effectively and function as part of a team and in collaboration with a range of people including community groups, workers, employers, statutory authorities and their representatives and other professionals
• use scientific and technological methods with an understanding of their advantages and limitations
• facilitate, educate, and promote health and safety in the workplace in relation to individuals, families, the community and environment
• recognise the global nature of OHS issues and be familiar with appropriate international standards
• demonstrate an understanding of how culture can influence OHS issues
• develop appropriate skills and knowledge to provide leadership for the improvement of OHS in the workplace

Entry requirements

English requirements

Curtin requires all applicants to demonstrate proficiency in English. Specific English requirements for this course are outlined in the IELTS table below.

You may demonstrate English proficiency using the following tests and qualifications.

Have your supporting documents to hand, and ensure they meet our guidelines. The documents may include certified copies of your qualifications, English language proficiency documents and supplementary forms for certain courses.

If your documents are not issued in English, an official translation from a recognised translation service must be provided.

If you have undertaken previous study or work that matches the content of some of your Curtin course units, you may be able to obtain credit for recognised learning, which exempts you from studying those units.

You can apply direct online through our Applicant Portal. You can access the Applicant Portal by:

1. Navigating to the relevant course page
2. Click ‘Apply now’
3. When the pop-up window appears, select “Apply directly to Curtin University”.

If you want to package your course with a Curtin English course, you can submit your application with your course application documents to streamline the process.

If your application is successful, you will receive an offer that you will need to accept or reject.

If you accept your offer, you will receive a Confirmation of Enrolment ­– a document from Curtin that details your course, how long you will be studying the course, and the tuition fees. This document can be used for acquiring a student visa.

Apply to the Australian government for your student visa. Gaining a student visa will allow you to participate in full-time study in Australia and work up to 40 hours in a fortnight. If you’re under 18 years of age, you must have approved accommodation and welfare arrangements in place before a visa can be issued.
