Optional modules are selected from the Staffordshire University lifelong learning portfolio to meet the personal and professional needs of the practitioner.

    Teaching

Teaching and learning strategies differ for each individual module. Depending on the module you select you may be required to attend University to participate in taught sessions, or to engage in on-line learning activities as part of a distance learning module.

Most modules will require you to work with generic information and apply this directly to your role in the operating department. In doing so, you will develop the key academic skills of reflection, critical appraisal and analysis.

    Assessment

Assessment is aligned fully to the learning outcomes for each module.

Formative assessments may be included in modules to develop your knowledge base and prepare you for your module assessment. These assessments may take place on-line, in clinical practice areas, or in the classroom, where you take part in a discussion forum or presents and feedback group or self-directed work.

Summative assessments are the final module assessments which provide you with the final grade for your module. These take on a variety of forms, but all assessments require the presentation of information in a suitably scholarly format. You will be asked to write assignments of varying length or make formal presentations. Details of the methods of assessment for each module will be provided during the module launch session and tutorial support will be timetabled to allow you to discuss your work and progress with the module lead.

    Learning support

In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning in a number of areas. These include study skills (including reading, note-taking and presentation skills); written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy); academic writing (including how to reference); research skills; critical thinking and understanding arguments; and revision, assessment and examination skills (including time management).
