Prop Making

About

Studying on the Prop Making pathway of the BA (Hons) Theatre Practice course, you will:

Receive intensive training in making props using a broad range of materials and techniques
Develop research-based, aesthetic and technical design interpretation choices
Undertake industry placements within a range of professional practices
Become one of Central's Prop Makers: develop into a highly technically skilled, creatively inventive, collaborative and informed individual, able to contribute effectively and professionally to any production and its team.

What does Prop Making involve?

Prop Making reaches into all areas of the entertainment industry â€“ theatre, film, television, window display, model animation, community arts, museum installation and replication work.

The Prop Maker will work with designers and directors to produce bespoke items for individual requirements. It is rare to make the same thing twice, so the Prop Maker has to be ingenious, quick-thinking, explorative, dexterous, enjoy problem solving and have a love of materials and all things three-dimensional.

The work can range from small, intricate, hand-held reproduction items, to large-scale, articulated structures, but will always require excellent artistic and creative skills. Working independently or as part of a team, accurately and to deadlines, the Prop Maker will cover a broad ranges of materials and techniques.

Gain a high level of technical competence

You will gain experience and a high level of technical competence, working with a wide range of prop making materials and techniques in Central's first-class facilities, including sculpting skills, casting techniques, welding, 3D printing, polystyrene carving, vacuum forming, carpentry, life casting, paint finishing and texturing. You will develop skills in research, analysis, collaboration and design interpretation, as well as strong technical drawing skills and an understanding of colour theories and working to scale. You will also cultivate a broad understanding of period styles and aesthetics.

Opportunities on the course

Central's Prop Makers develop into highly technically skilled, creatively inventive, collaborative and informed individuals, able to contribute effectively and professionally to any production and its team. You will be offered a range of opportunities to develop excellent and comprehensive prop making skills as part of a prop making team, including on public productions at Central, working closely with students of other theatre disciplines in order to develop an overall understanding of performance and theatre production. You will also undertake placements in the industry to develop a full CV and further extend your skills. You will participate in a public exhibition presenting your work to invited industry employers and others.

Second-year Entry

Entry Requirements

Candidates must be eligible to satisfy the admission requirements. Invitation to audition/interview and admission will be based on the reasonable expectation from your application that you have the potential to complete and contribute positively to the degree, and that you would benefit from master’s level study.

Applicants will normally be able to demonstrate the following:

relevant qualifications (e.g. undergraduate degree or equivalent), or professional experience which has prepared you equivalently for advanced study
appropriate written reference
evidence of a specific commitment to the course with an understanding of relevant issues and practices
evidence of appropriate level of skills/competencies
evidence of the ability to work in collaboration with colleagues and, where relevant, with external parties
evidence of a capacity to work at master’s level, e.g. engage with complex matters in the field, or demonstrate originality in the application of knowledge.

How to Apply

How to Apply for Postgraduate Courses

All applications to postgraduate courses at Central must be made directly to the School. We have an online application system through which you should submit your application.

When to Apply for Postgraduate Courses

We will start receiving applications from 10 October each year, for courses starting in the following September/October. Applications for the MA Acting courses, which are January start, will open the preceding January.

There is no formal closing date for direct applications to Central, but you are strongly advised to apply as early as possible after applications open, as we consider applications in the order they are submitted and will close courses once they become full. Late applications will be considered as long as there are still places available on the course. We will post notice on the individual course pages on Central’s website when a course becomes full and is no longer considering applications.
