    Bachelor of Public Administration / Program Overview

    Background to the program and subject area:
    The Department of Public Administration was established in 1965 as a department in the Faculty of Business. The department awards a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Public Administration. Last year, the number of students enrolled in this department is approximately 950, of whom 870 were undergraduates and 80 were graduate students. There are twelve faculty members, of whom four are full professors, one is an associate professor, 3 are assistant professors, one is a lecture and three are instructors. Altogether, the faculty encompasses many decades of experience and research in the public sector. The department has also sent students abroad for Ph.D. in Public Administration.
    Due to the requirement of sustainable development, and to the need for a well-established public sector that has the ability to use modern technology in order to provide distinguished, fair, and transparent public service to Jordanian citizens, the Faculty of Business of the University of Jordan is planning to establish a Ph.D. program in Public Administration.
    Vision statements of the program:
    Our vision is that the Department of Public Administration will remain the leading public administration department in Jordan, committed to providing an environment of academic rigor and excellence, will continue to provide graduate and undergraduate courses that enable students to acquire a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in the areas of analysis, decision making, and communication, and to continually improve the quality of services provided to the community
    Mission statements of the program:
    The mission of the Department of Public Administration is to prepare students to assume public, non-profit, or business careers in order to contribute to the welfare of our society.
    Program Aims:
    1. Enhance the existing curricula for undergraduate and graduate programs that aim to place Public Management students in advanced positions in comparison with graduates from other universities and institutions, locally and regionally.
    2. Continuously improve in order to reach academic excellence, both in undergraduate and graduate programs.
    3. The Department is in the process of developing a Ph.D. program in Public Management and its different disciplines in cooperation with other universities at the local and international level.
    4. Work toward ingraining national loyalty, patriotism, and national pride in our students.
    5. Work toward the implementation of comprehensive quality assurance in the academic courses.
    6. Work toward ensuring a safe and stable academic environment in the Department.
    7. Develop an academic advisory system for students in the Department to address their academic and social issues.
    8. Regularly review and upgrade the curriculum to reflect new developments and change in the field of public management.
     

    Bachelor of Public Administration / Program Intended Learning Outcomes

    At the successful completion of the Bachelor Program in Public Administration (PA) the student should be able to:
    1. Identify main aspects of PA related to public sector management hierarchy,organizational behaviors, total quality management, and legislative and regulatory processes.
    2. Evaluate different aspects of public budgets, budgeting and fiscal policies management, and analyzing and evaluating methods of securing public funds and the techniques used by the government in managing public funds.
    3. Identify different social, economic and development issues within PA environment.
    4. Identify and analyze supervisory and leadership behaviors in PA, and evaluate the ethical implications of PA.
    5. Examine contemporary concepts related to globalization, crises management, domestic product, markets, national income, international trade, and economic
    development.
    6. Utilize Information Technology in PA (electronic governments).
    7. Employ critical thinking and problem-solving skills in PA and provide scholars with effective scientific research skills and methodologies to solve problems and making decisions as potential management.
    8. Show effective communication and leadership skills through projects and course assignment presentations.
    9. Identify ethical issues in PA context and critically discuss ethical reasoning to administration circumstances.
    10. Develop oral and written communication skills using appropriate technologies to elaborate information related to PA.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Students with a high school diploma or its equivalent from outside Jordan can enroll in higher education institutions directly through websites of public and private universities or intermediate community colleges based on their averages. Universities implement the credit hours system, which allows students to choose courses according to their study plan.

    Students wishing to enroll in a master's program must hold a bachelor's degree. Furthermore, students who wish to enroll in doctoral programs must hold a master's degree.

    In addition, students wishing to enroll in postgraduate programs are required to provide a certificate confirming their English proficiency level in a TOEFL or IELTS exam. They could also demonstrate a certain proficiency level in French or German. Lastly, they could take an English language exam held by the higher education institution they apply in.

    In the event that the student fails to prove the required level of English, German or French, or fails the English equivalency exam, they may study a qualifying program in English at the university where they undertake additional six credit hours; he/she must score a minimum grade that varies according to their specialization.
