    Are you fascinated by science of sleep and your body clock? Do you crave the opportunity to take your research and learning to the next level? The MRes Sleep and Chronobiology will give dedicated students a practical education in sleep and circadian rhythms research training, informed by a wealth of exceptional staff research and experience.

    Our staff here at Northumbria University are actively engaged in exciting research on a range of topics, in a research environment rated as internationally excellent (3*) and world-leading (4*) (REF 2021).

    You will work in a professional research environment and develop advanced research skills that will enable you to plan, execute, analyse and disseminate high-quality sleep and circadian rhythms research. This includes access to state-of-the-art laboratories equipped with industry-standard equipment, meaning that you graduate with all the familiarity of working in a research lab. The programme will provide them with experience working in professional, international, and world-leading academic research environments. This is a major advantage when it comes to seeking employment in research, clinical or industry settings.

    You will learn from those at the forefront of their fields. Our strength in sleep and circadian research has significantly increased. This places us 15th in the UK for research power (REF 2021).

    With the opportunity to work both individually and collaboratively on research projects, you will gain valuable critical and transferable skills and an understanding of the professional and ethical issues relating to producing research. You will graduate with your Sleep and Chronobiology MRes ready for employment in a research context, applied setting or doctoral-level training in sleep research.

    Assessments and interactive activities reflect the kinds of tasks active researchers engage with. For example, on this course, you will learn to conduct a collaborative research project in and develop programming skills for conducting sophisticated data analysis and building experiments.

    Much of your learning will be hands-on, and you will have the opportunity to engage in ongoing world-class research, for example, running a range of qualitative and quantitative studies on topics aligned with the expertise of our staff.

    This distinctive and specialist postgraduate course incorporates professional training and advanced study in sleep and circadian research and is designed to make you as employable as possible. 

    We provide you with an authentic learning experience, enabling you to work in a professional research environment. You will have the invaluable opportunity to work on a research placement with an academic researcher from the Department of Psychology, collaborating with this member of staff, their research partners and research groups to design, develop and implement a research project based on shared interests and enabling you to gain the applied research and team working skills that are desired by employers in the sector. 

    The MRes Sleep and Chronobiology provides you with the advanced research experience, critical knowledge and transferable skills to enable you to plan, execute, analyse and disseminate high-quality sleep and circadian research. 

    You will graduate as a trained sleep and circadian researcher fit for employment in professional research settings, enterprising and entrepreneurial activity or further study. Many of the previous graduates in the Department of Psychology have continued to build on their research interests by going on to PhDs or followed careers in the industry, clinical settings and in the NHS.
