    The first course of its kind, our Sport Performance and Analysis MSc will enable you to integrate the study of high-performance sport with your own experiences as an athlete, coach, practitioner, or someone passionate about elite sport.

    Why study Sport and Performance Analysis at Northumbria?

    This Masters course is aimed at those with an interest in high-performance coaching and analysis.

    The Sport Performance and Analysis MSc programme aims to build upon your current knowledge, understanding and practical experiences of training and coaching environments. It will equip you with leading-edge academic knowledge, along with key practical and research skills, to become a critically reflective practitioner who is prepared for a career in high-performance sport.

    What can I expect from this course?

    On this Masters course, you will study how we need to adopt a holistic approach to high-performance professional practice. One that not only has an emphasis on technical and tactical improvement, but importantly involves understanding individual, collective and organisational goals, developing and maintaining productive relationships, and constructively influencing a range of key stakeholders.The focus of the curriculum will be:

    • How we analyse and support competition preparation, execution, co-ordinate and contribute to high-quality training environments
    • How we continually develop ourselves and mobilise others
    • How we enact ethical practice and protect the welfare of people empowered to achieve their potential

    At the start of Semester One, you will be informed of the options for Semester Two. You will be encouraged to discuss your choice of optional modules with your personal tutor. Information concerning the modules will also be made available on the Electronic Learning Platform. You will choose one of the following options:

    • Physiology of Sports Performance
    • Applied Sports Nutrition
    • Sponsorship & Strategic Sport Brand Management

    How will this course prepare me for my career?

    Throughout each semester, you will develop a critical understanding of relevant theoretical and vocational issues, with an emphasis on building a synergetic relationship between theory and practice. This will provide a basis for entry into further professional development within the sport industry, as well as doctoral study. This development of this programme has been guided by our world-leading and internationally excellent research as well as the key professional competencies outlined for elite performance support by UK Coaching.

    A key feature of our Sport Performance and Analysis MSc is its opportunities for volunteering within the University's sports department. A focus on professional skills and vocational practice throughout this course will help improve your employability by gaining hands-on experience.

    You will have the opportunity to benefit from the department’s links with internal and external partners, giving you the chance to experience authentic learning opportunities. The department has links with wide range of elite sport organisations that complement Northumbria's outstanding facilities, staff, and resources. Examples of those we have worked with in the past include: Newcastle United Football Club, the Lawn Tennis Association, Athletics Canada, England Rugby and British Cycling.

    Standard Entry

    Applicants should normally have:

    A minimum of a 2:2 honours degree in a relevant subject area such as sports science, sports performance and coaching, physical education, physiotherapy, social sciences. Work experience in a relevant field and/or a professional qualification may also be considered.

    English Language requirements

    International applicants are required to have a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with 6 in each component (or approved equivalent*).

    Career

    The Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation has a high number of renowned research-active members of staff. Some of them are accredited elite performance coaches and are currently researching topics pertinent to the field of study. 

    There will be an emphasis on developing your advanced research skills and critical understanding of working within the performance sport sector. You will examine theories, models and research skills that are pertinent to practitioner practice. You will also assess and critique the impact of current practice within coaching and athlete performance.

    In the final semester of the course, you will carry out an empirical piece of research under the supervision of your specified project tutor. The project requires a synthesis of knowledge and a critical understanding of a related topic covered throughout the programme. The final project provides an opportunity to conduct applied research in the field of sport performance and is designed by the student with support from their allocated supervisor. You will use the knowledge and techniques developed over the course to develop your understanding of the subject area further.
