    About

    The programme focuses on equipping students with the necessary competences for systematically overcoming typical problems in translation and intercultural technical communication, in accordance with the EMT competence framework drawn up by the EU Commission, Directorate-General for Translation:

    • language competence
    • intercultural competence
    • research competence
    • thematic competence
    • technical competence
    • service provision competence.

    Therefore, the programme not only includes practical exercises for translating technical texts in both directions, but also mandatory courses on theoretical and practical topics such as: scholarly work, linguistics, translation studies, translation as intercultural communication, terminology and terminography, project and translation management, translation tools, documentation and translation quality, labour market and prices. In addition, compulsory elective courses include modules on interpreting studies, rhetoric, consecutive interpreting, note-taking for consecutive interpreting, German-Arabic legal terminology and matters involving Islamic law.

    The Translatology MA is a consecutive programme which usually follows on from a translation-related bachelors degree. In addition to applied linguistics, there is a focus on specialised translation. Students must choose a main language (English, French, Russian or Spanish). In addition, for the elective area it is recommended that students choose another translation language. The masters degree programme aims to teach methodological and theoretical knowledge for effectively tackling typical problems in translation and in intercultural technical communication. This spectrum of knowledge includes in particular: specific strategies for the acquisition and transfer of knowledge, including the cultural factors relevant to translation the production of specialised texts for particular purposes and target audiences terminological, lexicographic and translational methods tools and technologies quality and project management. The aim of the course is to enable students to analyse specialist texts, to interpret their meaning correctly in the source language, and to transfer them into the target language in the desired quality. This is achieved by means of the targeted development of methodological skills in the fields of translatology, technical communication, language technology, terminology and specialised translation. Students also learn how to use appropriate technical equipment. In addition, the course prepares graduates to carry out translation projects in accordance with practical requirements and industry standards and to manage and assess translation quality. Graduates of the Translatology degree programme are awarded the academic degree of Master of Arts (MA).

    Entry Requirements

    • Admission to the study programme is subject to a first academic degree or a degree from a state or state-recognised university of cooperative education.
    • Knowledge of German at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and
    • knowledge of Arabic at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and
    • knowledge of the second B* or C language (English, French, Russian, Spanish) at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
    • This programme requires applicants to pass an aptitude test. More information is available on the institute website.

    * Standard EU differentiation between A language (mother tongue or strict equivalent), B language (foreign language mastered both actively and passively) and C language (foreign language mastered passively).

    English Program Requirements

    A first academic degree or a degree from a state or state-recognised university of cooperative education; proof of knowledge of the chosen B language (language option in the core area) and the second B language or C language equivalent to C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or equivalent proof, for one of the following foreign languages: English, French, Russian, Spanish.

    1. Checking your documents

    If you wish to participate in the German course to prepare for studying, you will need to have what is known as a“direct”higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB),i.e.one that is valid for German universities.

    Please check in the databasewhether your school and university certificates entitle you to study in Germany.

    • Do you meet the requirements for the German course and does your previous education mean that you have a direct HZB? Then apply for the German course!
    • Do your documents contain an “indirect” HZB, i.e. one that is not valid for German universities? Please check the information about preparing for your studiesto find out how to apply to the Studienkolleg Sachsen.

    2. Confirmation document

    Refugees may only apply free of charge to the German course to prepare for studying if they have a document confirming that they have sought advice. This is called a Beratungsbestätigung. In order to apply, please emailus a scan of your residence title and indicate which degree programmeyou would like to study. Please note that we cannot accept any responsibility for personal documents you send to us by email. Alternatively, you can also send us a copy of your documents by post. We will then send you a personalised confirmation document, which you will need to upload when you apply.

    3. Apply through uni-assist

    4. Admission and entrance test

    Once uni-assist has successfully checked your documents, you will receive a letter of admission forthe German course from mid-August 2021. This will be sent to you via the AlmaWeb study portal. When you have been admitted, you can expect to be invited to an entrance test in September. The course starts in October 2021.
