Therapeutic Recreation in Recreation and Sport Management

    About

Therapeutic Recreation major prepares students for employment in a variety of health care settings including programs for mental health and intellectual disabilities, physical rehabilitation centers, drug and alcohol treatment centers, and community-based programs. The program requires several out-of-class commitments, including overnight and weekend day commitments, and students should be prepared to complete background checks, drug screens, and other organizational requirements. Additionally, this program requires three field experiences that must be taken in sequence. The first two are part-time practicum experiences and the program concludes with a semester-long internship experience. Graduates fulfill the eligibility requirements for National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.

    Major Requirements and Rules

    Advising Transition

Academic advising for freshmen, sophomores, and transfer students in the Therapeutic Recreation major occurs in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS) Office of Advising and Student Services (BEC 332). If you have not been advised by anyone in CEHHS Advising before, please visit their website for more information about scheduling an appointment with their office. The KRSS Advising Staff is not able to review a student's academic history if they are not currently a Therapeutic Recreation major.

A student will transition from CEHHS Advising to KRSS Department Advising after he/she completes the following:

    • Maintains a minimum UT GPA of 2.5 after a minimum of 30 hours of coursework
    • Completion of RSM 201  with a grade of C or better
    • Completion of ENGL 101 * and ENGL 102 *, and one Quantitative Reasoning course

At the end of each semester, staff of the CEHHS Office of Advising and Student Services will compile a list of students ready to change to departmental advising. Students will be emailed an advising transition letter with the name and contact information of their new department advisor. Students will then be responsible for scheduling a meeting with their new advisor to complete this transition. Scheduling with KRSS Advisors should be done via email by contacting your new advisor directly.

Minimum Grades and Required GPA for Continuation in the Major

Any Recreation and Sport Management course taken must be passed with a minimum grade of C. A 2.5 GPA is required to register for RSM 294N *, RSM 394N *, and RSM 494N  and to graduate.

College of Education, Health and Human Sciences Honors Program

Sport Management majors have the opportunity to participate in the college's honors program. For eligibility and requirements, see College of Education, Health and Human Sciences Honors Program .
