TopMath: Applied Mathematics (Master) with Integrated Doctorate Program

    About

The TopMath elite program is a cooperation between the Technical University of Munich and the University of Augsburg, in connection with the Elite Network of Bavaria. The goal of the program is to provide outstanding students with sustained support and assist them with commencing a doctorate directly after the successful conclusion of their bachelor's. After just two years of basic vocational education and training, students are thus progressively integrated into current research alongside their continued education and training. In the process, the central focus is on so-called “Independent Studies”: research components completed under intensive supervision on a one-to-one basis with internationality renowned professors. Regular components are e.g. workshops, vacation seminars, intensive courses as well as evaluations and appraisals.

For a comprehensive description of the program, please refer to the degree program documentation:

    • Degree program documentation for the master's program in TopMath (PDF, German)
The TopMath elite program offers outstanding students the opportunity to commence a doctorate directly after their bachelor's. Students simultaneously acquire a Master of Science.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

Admission to a doctorate at TUM requires a university degree completed with above-average results (Diploma, Magister or Master’s), an equivalent state examination, or a Master’s examination at a university of applied science.

Results are considered to be above average if studies were completed with an average grade of at least 2.5, or at a minimum passed with a grade of “good.” In exceptional cases, your above-average qualifications can also be proven through academic work (e.g. publications) completed after your course of study.

Decisions about your qualifications are always made by the degree-awarding institution / department.

A doctorate from TUM requires very good written and spoken English skills. There are no required minimum scores for the relevant tests (IELTS, TOEFL, etc.), but applicants should be able to speak fluently with the supervisor about their research area during the application interview. German skills are highly beneficial, especially for finding your way around Munich and the surrounding area.

More information about admission requirements can be found in the TUM doctoral regulations.

    English Program Requirements

All degree programs at TUM Informatics require proof of proficiency in German, English, or both.

Check TUM’s central admissions website for information on accepted language proficiency certificates here.

Please remember that you often will need to sign up for language tests several months in advance.

Should you have no knowledge in German at all, you should plan to devote approximately 9 to 12 months to intensive courses in order to reach the required level. You must be able to prove proficiency in the relevant language for your program in order to be admitted.

For Master's applications at the department of Informatics: if the language of instruction of your Bachelor's degree was English (100%), this can be accepted as English language proof for the Master's application.
Bachelor's thesis written in English can also be accepted as English proof. In this case a document from your university (
