    About

    This course offers a practical programme of study, enabling you to bring characters to life. This specialised Animation programme will transform you into a versatile creative in the art of the moving image. Designed and developed from the ground up with employability as the core aim, you will develop skills in 2D, 3D and stop motion animation.

    You will finish your studies with the professional skills and creative thinking strategies to pursue a career within animation studios, work as a freelance artist, or start your own studio.

    Students will:

    • Learn the principles of visual communication and drawing and apply them to character design, background design, storyboarding and scene layout.
    • Explore the principles of animation with a focus on 2D digital techniques.
    • Work in teams on a short film to be submitted to film festivals, both nationally and internationally.
    • Practice character animation using 3D techniques to build up a professional show reel.
    • Specialise and develop a final degree project that will push on the boundaries of your skills to ensure you stand out from the crowd in the job market.

    Your studies will see you gain experience in digital skills and techniques used to bring your imagination from ideas to screen through, 2D Animation, 3D Animation, and stop motion animation, depending on which you choose to specialise in.

    You can also choose to study this course as a four-year integrated masters option MDes Animation UCAS code: 259C or as a foundation year BA (Hons) Animation (four years including foundation year) UCAS code: 259D

    This Animation programme helps you transform you and your passion for bringing characters to life and storytelling, into a versatile creative in the art of the moving image.

    The programme will give you experience creating animated projects from initial ideas to final results.

    You will learn to apply the principles of animation using diverse techniques. Such as 2D drawn, 2D digital animation, motion graphics and 3D animation. You will acquire industry standard software skills and the creative strategies to be able to develop professional experimental projects as well as client briefs. The course aims to provide you with a showreel that will allow you to start a freelance professional activity, apply for post-graduate studies, and enter the animation industry.

    YEAR 1 (LEVEL 4)

    This year has an emphasis on drawing and designing the creative process. You will learn to generate ideas, research inspiring references, create engaging final images of character design sheets, backgrounds, and storyboards.

    For entry onto an Undergraduate programme, applicants require:

    Community college diploma with 65% minimum

    Or, holders of a a Tawjihi 65%+ average plus a recognised foundation programme

    Or, holders of the International Baccalaureate Diploma with 27 points or more will be considered for direct admission to Bachelor degree courses

    Career opportunities exist in all areas of animation, including: concept artists, storyboard artists, assistant animators, freelance animators, character designers, game artists, interactive developers, environment and background artists, freelance visualisers, model making, set design, digital media texture art, digital painting, compositing, lighting, rigging, visual effects and post-production.

    This degree also allows you to gain a range of transferable skills that can lead to a variety of employment opportunities. Further study opportunities are also available at MDes / MA or PGCE level.

    You do not have to pay your tuition fees upfront.

    Wrexham Glyndŵr University's tuition fees for 2022/23 for a full-time undergraduate degree course are 9000 per year.

    Application stage

    If you are an international student who requires a Student visa, your application should be made via Centurus. You will need to fill in your details, upload any documents relevant to your application and confirm your student declaration.

    If you are applying for a research degree, such as MPhil or PhD, you should click here.

    The documents that need to be uploaded are:

    • A scanned copy of your passport (including personal details page).
    • Certificates and transcripts showing your academic progression so far.
    • Certified translations of overseas certificates and transcripts where the document is not in English or Welsh.
    • An acceptable English language certificate.
    • Copy of Tuberculosis screening if you are a resident in any of the countries listed. More information about Tuberculosis screening can be found here.
    • 1 academic reference letter (further references might be required).
    • Evidence of finances to pay first year’s full tuition fee and to cover UKVI maintenance requirements.
    • Evidence of work experience (where relevant).

    If you have previously studied in the UK, you are also required to provide the extra documents listed below:

    • A scanned copy of the passport page showing entry clearance in to the UK and return overseas.
    • Copies of any UK visas you have previously held.
    • Copies of Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) documents / visa letters for all previous studies undertaken in the UK.
    • Copies of any visa / ATAS refusal letters (if applicable).
    • Copies of any visa / ATAS appeal or administrative review letters (if applicable).
    • Evidence of any removal / deportation / detention notices (if applicable).
