    About

    The knowledge and skills you develop will enhance your clinical decision making and research practice within urology enabling you to contribute to the knowledge base. You are encouraged to focus on topical issues within urology surgical practice, concentrating on aspects of practice that are relevant to your specific interests and practice.

    The course enables you to:

    • further develop an understanding of the principles and clinical concepts underpinning practice in general urology and minimal access surgery in urology
    • further develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to perform evidence-based practice and research within the specialist field of general urology and minimal access surgery in urology
    • foster a commitment to lifelong learning and an inquisitive approach to clinical practice in general urology and minimal access surgery in urology that will enable you to acquire skills to practice safely and enhance their practice.

    This course will develop your understanding of the concepts and principles underpinning the care of patients undergoing urology surgery as well as your ability to find, critically evaluate and apply relevant research evidence to ensure clinical effectiveness.

    Core modules

    Developing Research Projects

    You gain the knowledge and skills you need to design and manage a primary or secondary research audit or evaluation project that's relevant to your practice. You also cover research governance and ethics, and prepare for applying for ethical approval or release. And we prepare you for your dissertation if you choose to progress to the master's course.

    Dissertation and Research Article

    You plan, undertake and write up a research project relevant to your subject. A range of research methodologies can be utilised such as quantitative, qualitative, systematic review, evaluation and audit methods. You will also gain experience in writing a research article for publication.

    General and Minimal Access Surgery in Urology

    You extend your knowledge and understanding of the key concepts underpinning evidence-based surgical urology practice. You further develop your knowledge and understanding of applied surgical urology topics such as anatomy and physiology, clinical assessment and investigation, evidence-based surgical urology and minimally invasive surgery practice, and advanced clinical decision-making.

    Implementing Evidence Based Practice

    You gain the knowledge and skills to use research evidence to inform your clinical practice. You develop focused questions, undertake a structured search, critically evaluate research evidence, apply evidence to practice and evaluate the application to practice. The module also supports you in making the transition to studying at master's level.

    Practical Statistics

    You gain a solid grounding in the statistical concepts needed in analysing basic health and medical data. The indicative content provides an overview of the basic concepts in statistics. It leads you from understanding basic fundamentals up to multivariate analysis.

    You learn through lectures, seminars, practical activities, clinical simulation, computer lab work and group work. The majority of teaching is delivered by principal and senior lecturers at Teesside University. The specialist module is delivered by appropriately qualified clinical staff including consultants in surgical gastroenterology.

    Full-time students study across two days a week and are expected to devote the remaining time to individual study including the optional observational experience.

    Part-time students have the option to undertake most sessions by attendance, distance or flexible learning but attendance for the specialist module is compulsory and this is scheduled for approximately one day a month across the first year of the course.

    We use a range of summative assessment methods throughout including written reports, proposal, written and oral exams, statistics mini project, computer based statistics exam, dissertation thesis and research article. You receive formative feedback on your progress for all modules throughout the course. Feedback on summative assessments is provided electronically for all assessed work.

    The course supports your career development by enhancing the research, evidence-based practice skills and principles underpinning specialist clinical practice that are required within the specialist field of surgical urology. It provides an additional master's level qualification that may be used to support career progression. Engaging in research and a record of publication are important aspects in career progression if you are aiming to achieve a consultant position. Providing an opportunity to develop your research skills and to support you in preparing your work for publication is an important element of the course.

    Full-time students have the opportunity to undertake and optional observational experience within a clinical setting. A clinical advisor devises an individualised plan for each student which is detailed in a learning contract. Observational opportunities are spread across the course and include a range of relevant activities. They may take place at any of the local NHS trust sites and you are expected to cover any associated travel costs.
