    About

The Master's programme in German as a Second Language / German as a Foreign Language combines the study of German as a second and as a foreign language with a focus on one of the subject areas during the course of study. The programme has an interdisciplinary orientation with linguistic, language didactic and intercultural topics. Graduates are entitled to teach in integration courses as well as in a special feature of this programme — literacy courses of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees BMBF (authorisation for this is granted by the BMBF upon request). The Master’s degree programme in German as a Second and Foreign Language at the University of Hildesheim has a number of special features: Your degree includes both German as a second language and German as a foreign language. You will qualify for vocational activities in teaching contexts, in the creation of textbooks, in educational planning, in migration work with a focus on education and language as well as in communication consultancy. Through internships, projects and your own research projects, you will become experts for the acquisition of the German language under the conditions of multilingualism as well as in authentic teaching of the German language, German-speaking cultures and intercultural skills at home and abroad. The course has a focus on literacy. With your degree, you will be qualified as a teacher for integration and literacy courses. In all areas, you will also be qualified to take due account of the intercultural dimension of linguistic activity and to reflect on it in a scientific manner. This feature of the programme in Hildesheim distinguishes it from other universities. The course is interdisciplinary, and it is offered by both the Institute for Intercultural Communication and the Institute for German Language and Literature. Thus, perspectives of interculturality, multilingual linguistics, subject didactics and literature didactics are linked. The Master of Education and the major in German as a second language can be studied synchronously in a double degree programme with extensive credit options. This means that two Master's degrees are achieved. Your lecturers are specialised in the areas of multilingualism, intercultural learning and teaching methodology. Several of them are multilingual themselves. You will experience teaching abroad or gain a profound knowledge of the DaZ situation at school and of the intensive internship support in teacher training. This course accepts 25 students per year. Therefore, you will study in a personal atmosphere. For our foreign students, we offer intensive support through tutorials, language (learning) advice, intercultural workshops and language learning tandems. And last but not least: You can expect a motivated team that designed the course together and led it through its first positive reaccreditation in 2017.
