    About

The central research objective of this programme is to analyse the cooperative dynamics of neuronal systems on different hierarchical levels of nervous system organisation from cellular function to behavioural control. At all levels the research deals with the dynamical integration of spatially separated subsystems into functionally coherent processing architectures. Key research questions include: How do supramolecular complexes and interacting subcellular structures contribute to adaptive single neuron computation? How do the collective dynamics of biological neural networks drive processes of adaptive coding and learning? How do dynamical interactions among sets of brain areas mediate the flexible use of neuronal processing resources and strategies? Research approaches are developed and applied to investigate cooperative neuronal processes that occur on spatial and temporal scales from the submicron organisation of ion channel complexes in neurons to the biomechanics of the human body and from the sub-millisecond precision of temporal coding in the auditory system to the formation of memory traces that last for a lifetime. We utilise methodologies for dissecting the dynamical and statistical laws of interacting multicomponent systems rooted in the theory of non-linear dynamics, in the statistical physics of complex systems, and in scientific computation. Projects typically combine advanced data analysis and biologically detailed as well as abstract mathematical modelling approaches. The programme is closely associated with the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience (BCCN) Göttingen and the Bernstein Focus Neurotechnology (BFNT) Göttingen, as well as the Collaborative Research Centre 889.
