Designed to help you achieve all of the learning outcomes specified by the National College for Teaching and Leadership, you'll gain a broad and deep understanding of effective practice in the area of SEN and leadership.
If you're a Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) or aspiring to be one, this course will enable you to gain the National Award for SEN Co-ordination, which is required for the role.

- You'll gain a broad and deep understanding of effective practice in the area of SEN and leadership
- You'll examine current legislation and service requirements for SEN, and will be encouraged to challenge existing practices
- You'll focus on positive outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities and how you might support others in delivering these. You'll be more informed about how to deliver school improvement in this area.
The National Award for SEN Co-ordination is recognised in England as a high quality professional qualification which must be held by school-based co-ordinators of special educational needs and disability SEND (SENCOs) within three years of appointment to the role. By Law, SENCOs must also hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS, EYTS or QTLS).
If you have QTS, EYTS or QTLS, you will have achieved the PG Cert: National Award for SEN Co-ordination: Leading Effective, Inclusive Practice in SEN.
If you do not have QTS, EYTS or QTLS, you will achieve PG Cert: Leading Effective, Inclusive Practice in SEN but not the National Award.
This course is designed to deepen your professional knowledge and skill in leading effective practice for SEN in your organisation.
The course will also examine current legislation and service requirements for SEND. You will be supported in developing an informed, critical stance on matters of debate. You will learn to apply small-scale enquiry in deep and critical ways to improve or challenge existing practices. You will also be able to apply recent research on good practice.
Underpinning the course is a focus on positive outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities and how you, as a knowledgeable, critical leader, might support others in delivering these.
