    Overview

    The Postgraduate Diploma in Aeromedical Retrieval and Transport (PGDipAeroRT) provides advanced training in retrieval medicine and aeromedical evacuation for medical practitioners who are involved as clinical advisers and practitioners in the speciality of aeromedical retrieval and transportation. This two-year, part-time programme provides the basic qualification for those who want to find work, or those who are already engaged in, patient transportation, independent of which stream of clinical practice they originate.

    The Postgraduate Diploma in Aeromedical Retrieval and Transport (PGDipAeroRT) is also available through Distance Learning.

    • AVME 717 Medical Logistics in Aeromedical Transport

    • AVME 718 Operational Aspects of Aeromedical Transport

    • AVME 721 Clinical Care in the Air

    • AVME 722 Organisation of Aeromedical Systems

    A candidate may apply to substitute a research paper, AVME 780 or AVME 785, for one paper above.

    Subject to approval, a candidate may be granted an exemption for up to two of the prescribed papers on the basis of having completed an appropriate paper or papers at an equivalent level offered by the University of Otago, another university or an approved examining body.

    Note: A candidate who has completed the requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate in Aeromedical Retrieval and Transport shall be exempted from those papers in the programme for the diploma which have been previously passed for the certificate.

    Regulations for the Postgraduate Diploma in Aeromedical Retrieval and Transport (PGDipAeroRT)

    1. Admission to the Programme

      1. Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).
      2. Every applicant shall have been admitted to the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery of a university in New Zealand or hold an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences).

    2. Structure of the Programme

      1. The programme shall consist of four papers in Aeromedical Retrieval and Transport, AVME 717, AVME 718, AVME 721 and AVME 722.
      2. With approval of the Programme Academic Co-ordinator, a candidate may substitute a research paper, AVME 780 or AVME 785 (30 points), for one paper in (a) above.
      3. A candidate who has completed the requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate in Aeromedical Retrieval and Transport shall be credited with those papers in the programme for the diploma which have been previously passed for the certificate.

    3. Duration of the Programme

      1. The programme will normally be completed in two years of part-time study.
      2. A candidate shall satisfy the requirements of the programme within five years of admission to the programme.

    4. Level of Award of the Diploma

      The diploma may be awarded with distinction or with credit.

    5. Variations

      The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences) may in exceptional circumstances approve a course of study which does not comply with these regulations.

    Requirements

    Entry Requirements

    Entrance requirements for postgraduate study vary by programme with most requiring a minimum bachelor-level qualification in the same field, and some having additional requirements such as relevant work experience and/or professional registration in New Zealand. 

    A postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma can usually be taken at any time after the completion of your bachelor's degree.

    If you hold an honours degree or postgraduate diploma you may be able to eligible for master’s study by thesis only. In some cases if you hold a bachelor’s degree you may apply for a coursework master’s degree or for master’s study by coursework and thesis.

    To study a PhD you usually require the completion of a master’s degree, or a first-class or upper second-class honours degree in the same area of study, or a related discipline, as your intended area of research.
