    About

    The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies offers graduate training leading to the M.A. degree in Russian culture. Languages offered: Russian (six years). Areas of specialization include art history, cultural anthropology, cultural studies, economics, film, gender studies, history, legal studies, linguistics, literature, political science, public policy, theater and performance studies, translation, and visual and information literacy. Students have the opportunity to participate in our exchange program with St. Petersburg State University and other study abroad programs. The Department maintains a cooperative relationship with the departments of Economics, Cultural Anthropology, History, Linguistics, Literature, and Theater, the programs in Jewish Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies, and the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke as well as with related programs at UNC-Chapel Hill.

    • GRE Scores: GRE General (Optional for 2022)
    • English Language Exam: TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test required* for applicants whose first language is not English
      *test waiver may apply for some applicants
    • GPA: Undergraduate GPA calculated on 4.0 scale required
    • Writing Sample (see departmental guidance below)

    English Program Requirements

    If your first language is not English, you must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test, or the Duolingo English Test.
