Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies

    About

The Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies offers graduate students at Duke the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union by pursuing a course of study leading to the Certificate in Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies. The certificate demonstrates that a student has completed significant cross-disciplinary coursework relating to this region and has attained a mastery of at least one Slavic language. Students enrolled in the Duke Graduate School, the Nicholas School of the Environment, the Law School, the Fuqua School of Business, and the Medical School are eligible to receive the certificate, provided they meet the following academic requirements: Students must complete five courses from three different disciplines and an interdisciplinary course sponsored by the center. Two of the five courses must be from a single discipline, excluding the student's major discipline. Students applying for the certificate will also be expected to demonstrate language proficiency in a Slavic or Eastern European language at the intermediate level. Graduate students with a special interest in law and legal institutions in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe may pursue the Certificate in Slavic, Eurasian, and Eastern European Studies with a specialization in legal studies. To receive this certificate, a graduate student must satisfy the general requirements for the certificate as listed above, but with three of the five required courses drawn from a list specifically relevant to legal studies. The student will also be required to complete an interdisciplinary seminar and demonstrate language proficiency. Each year the center awards a number of Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (subject to the availability of Department of Education funds). Students pursuing the certificate are also encouraged to participate in the Duke in Russia summer language and culture study at St. Petersburg University.
