    About

This module is part of a 60-credit award delivered as two 30-credit, degree-level modules spanning one academic year. The other module is: Care of the Neonate in Intensive Care. The module enables you to:

    • progress towards achieving the neonatal nurse qualified in speciality status.

    Funding 2022/23
Funded places may be available. You will be notified if you are eligible for a funded place within your organisation once you have applied.

You progress towards achieving the neonatal nurse qualification in speciality (QIS) status within the neonatal special and high dependency care setting.

This module covers topics such as system-related neonatal physiology, neonatal nursing care, focusing on:
    – fluid, electrolyte, nutrition and elimination management
    – neurological, development care and pain management
    – respiratory and cardiovascular management
    – skin, hygiene and infection control management
    – infant temperature management
    – palliative care, end-of-life care and bereavement management
    – investigations, tests and procedures.

You must complete a portfolio of competencies in your own practice area. You are mentored throughout by a member of the neonatal nursing team who has neonatal qualified in speciality status.

Learning and teaching strategies consist of a mixture of formal lectures, seminars, workshops, group work, high-fidelity simulation exercises and blended learning. You have the opportunity to share your experiences from clinical practice.

Where relevant, carers are invited to share their experiences of the healthcare journey. While specialist lecture input by staff within the Northern Neonatal Network helps disseminate knowledge and care standardisation across the network as well as promoting shared learning.

Care studies are drawn from practice to share learning and explore the theory underpinning practice. You use our virtual learning environment, e-learning@tees to support your student-centred learning throughout the module.

The module leader delivers most of the sessions but, at times, guest speakers are invited to share their knowledge and expertise.

You are expected to do further reading around the topics covered in class to consolidate your learning.
