Care of the Neonate in Intensive Care

    About

This module is part of a 60-credit award delivered as two 30-credit, degree-level modules spanning one academic year. The other module is Care of the Neonate in Special and High Dependency Care. If your normal place of work does not provide neonatal intensive care, you need to complete no less than four weeks in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on a supernumerary basis. This is something that will have to be negotiated and arranged by yourself. This is required to help you achieve specific neonatal intensive care unit clinical competencies. You must have a designated practice mentor to support your development and to assess the practice competencies. The practice mentor must be an experienced registered nurse with the neonatal QIS qualification.

    Funding 2022/23
Funded places may be available. You will be notified if you are eligible for a funded place within your organisation once you have applied.

You progress towards achieving the neonatal nurse qualification in speciality (QIS) status within the neonatal special and high dependency care setting.

    This module covers:
    – Resuscitation and stabilisation: ABCD within neonatal intensive care settings for sick infants and the ELBW neonate.

    – Supporting the family: Parental needs, advocacy, equality and diversity.
    – Professional practice: accountability, NMC Code, confidentiality, ethical decision making, viability.
    – Effective communication, team working, family-centred care within the context of the NICU.

All sessions will be delivered remotely.

Learning and teaching strategies consist of a mixture of formal lectures, seminars, workshops, group work, high-fidelity simulation exercises and blended learning. You have the opportunity to share your experiences from clinical practice.

Where relevant, carers are invited to share their experiences of the healthcare journey. While specialist lecture input by staff within the Northern Neonatal Network helps disseminate knowledge and care standardisation across the network as well as promoting shared learning.

Care studies are drawn from practice to share learning and explore the theory underpinning practice. You use our virtual learning environment, e-learning@tees to support your student-centred learning throughout the module.

The module leader delivers most of the sessions but, at times, guest speakers are invited to share their knowledge and expertise.

You are expected to do further reading around the topics covered in class to consolidate your learning.

You will be given formative feedback and tutorial support throughout the module

    Summative assessment includes:

    – 15 minute presentation to your peers on a specific neonatal condition
    – Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ)
